: removing tranny

I'm trying to get the 3speed tranny out of my 68 bronco. I've got everything out of the way and unhooked and all of the tranny bolts out and the sucker won't budge. I've got it strapped to a floor jack. Only thing I haven't removed is the starter, but it should come right out with the tranny shouldn't it? Because of these damn headers I don't know if I can get to one of the starter bolts. Any ideas on how to get this sucker off?

Also, I'm pulling it because when I pulled the tcase I forgot to hold the tranny in first gear and the output shaft dislodged. Anybody ever dig into one of these trannies before? How hard will it be to fix that bearing that came loose?

cant you just unbolt the tranny from the bellhousing ?

been awhile but i dont remember having to take the bell off unless it needed a clutch

I don't know, can you? Does the bellhousing separate from the tranny?

on second thought, I would like to replace the throwout bearing while I'm in there so I guess I need to take off the bell also.

Does the starter connect to the tranny and engine block or just the tranny. I still can't figure out why the tranny doesn't want to slide back

first, unbolt the tranny from the bellhousing. 4 bolts and it's loose. then unbolt the starter from the bellhousing, 2 bolts and it's loose. next unbolt the bellhousing from the block, 6 bolts and it's loose. easy as cake.

Starter has to come off, it bolts to the bellhousing, but, goes through the engine plate, which sits on the block side of the flywheel...
Take the trans off the bell, 4 5/8 head bolts. Then you can easily reach in and pull the throwout bearing off of the clutch fork, or pull the other 6 bolts and the starter and yank the bell off.

thanks for the info guys. It was that damn midplate that screwed me up. I could tell that the starter only bolted to the tranny but didn't realize the midplate would keep things from coming apart. Now I need some directions to fix this damn tranny. Anybody got a manual with instructions? I think I'll start another thread
