ok, I just snapped a factory front passenger shaft at 85 mph....not a good thing. it is an 89 mj, factory 30 front, vaccume disco, 3.07 gears.
are the spline counts the same in all xj/mj dana 30 vacu fronts, 4 cyl, 6 cyl, auto and manual....or are the shafts different?
I am making a junkyard trip in a few hours and need to know ASAP!!!!!

They should all be the same. I say "should" because sometimes Chysler did some strange things, but according to the books they are all the same. You can also look for YJ shaft. If you find a '95 YJ or XJ they should have the bigger 297 joint axles.

Is your dico on the passenger side of the tube or in the diff? I do know for a couple of years they used a diff vacuum disco in there axles. You will want to avoid these axles, but I am pretty sure they used them before '89. Just one of those odd Chrysler things I was talking about.
If your disco is in the tube then the previous posts still apply.

How did you manage to snap an axle shaft at 85 MPH? Did something wad up? Did it lock up the wheel? Sounds like there's a story behind this?

maybe ya'all can tell me!!!!
the axle is all but destroyed.......at least for now.
I'd be better off right now swapping in a junkyard unit.
I have no idea what happened...the drivers side u-joint has been rattling for a few weeks now, that's about all the warning I had. I was driving from fort collins to denver at 4 in the morning and suddenly lost almost all steering and almost all braking.
I made it off the highway without hitting anything and anyone, limped it to a gas station, called for my dad to come and get me.
went back and started to take everything apart, looks like a broken axle shaft, DESTROYED bearing, shreded rotor, and that's just what I can tell by giving it a once over.
maybe you guys can tell me!

That pretty much explains it.

so why would a bad (read: loose) u-joint on the drivers side brek the passenger side shaft in 2wd on the highway?
lets try this then...I know what happened...I just don't know why.

Then something froze from lack of..... lubrication?
