got my spare birfs with shafts from pmurf (thanks) and had the dilemma : how to carry them on the trail? well, i had probably seen this done before (can't remember) , so i started looking for some 3" schedule 40 cpvc to put them in only to find out that i would need at least 4". had an old piece lying around that measured 44" and hoped it would be long enough. at the hardware store i scored the adapter with threaded ends (2) and the endcaps that screws into the adapter .it has the square raised end in the middle that provides the perfect fit for the axle end. with the short axle outer dropped into the cap's square end, then drop the long axle in until it hits the birf of the short axle. i wrapped the end with a towel and electrical tape to keep from damaging the birf. then just screw the endcap down tight making sure that the axle end fits into the square of the endcap. measuring at 50" it fits tightly into my trucks' toolbox , and cost me less than $20. :smokin:
cool....pics?
i always just seperated my axles from the birf and used duct tape on the splines and but a rag around the birf and taped it in place.

I did something simular...also made one to hold the spare rear driveshaft. A couple of metal tie down loops bolted to the bed and I just strap both pvc tubes to the bed. Secure, compact and clean...that way I can keep even more crap in my bed mounted box

I separated the axles and Mar-Tacked the axles. Cleaned and packed the Birfields. A Birfields fits in a B-R ice cream container which I would cut to about ¾” and tape to the Birf. Put a little grease on the splines and tape them on the Birf. And axles. The long side axle I wrap in cloth and shove in the tube that is in the frame above the rear axle and the short side I carry in one of the ammo boxes that is bolted into the FB. The PVC pipe thing works great also, a couple of my wheeling partners have done on their runner’s.
