Spicer 18 X-case ???
What Trannys that will bolt up to this X-case with no adaptors

FWIW a friend (computer illeterate) has the following

SM420, Turbo 350, AX-15, T-98 Trannys

Spicer 18, Dana 200 (M-715) X-cases

258 - engine

The reason to use the Spicer 18 or the 200 is the Pass (front) Pass (rear) diffs

He is building Front and Rear steer Ford HP-60's and will have both pumpkins on the Pass Side (only 2 spare shafts needed this way)

He is also looking for an old Warn Overdrive for the S-18, or S-20

The only tranny that you listed that ever came Factory adapted to the Spicer 18 is the T98
There is no way to bolt the 18 up to anything without an adapter
The Jeep T98 was used in the late 50's early 60's in CJ5's with the 4 cylinder engines (as an option)
The jeep version of the T98 has a coarse spline 6 spline output that has a thread on it to retain the gear, the factory adapter is around 1" thick

There is more info on the Novak site

Read this: Spicer18 (http://www.off-road.com/jeep/tech/xfer/d18.html)

The T98 combo would be the shortest (combined length) and probably cheapest tranny that you listed to adapt to a Spicer18.

Also, check out this thread of mine: http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=22999. A guy offered to sell me a Warn OD to me for $225 with a bad bearing. By the way, the Dana20 transfer case cannot utilize an overdrive such as the Warn/Saturn unit.

If you want the strongest model 18 t-cases then you'll want a big hole version with a 1 1/4" intermidiate shaft, and 29 tooth gear. Judging from the little bit of information you've given us I suspect that the Spicer18 transfer case is going to be the weak link in your drivetrain. So get or make the strongest version possible. Also, the big hole version of the model 18 t-case uses the exact same case as a Dana20 which is perported to be thicker and stronger than the earlier versions of the model 18.

By the way, my vote goes towards adapting that SM420 to a Spicer18. The adapter kit from Rube is the cheapest one that I've found at $400.

I checked the Novak web page and noticed a new adapter kit
being released now for mating a SM465 to a D-18. The adapter
is only 1" thick of added length. so the trans and adapter only
measure 13"....... I haven't measured how long the transfercase
is itself, but 13" is pretty darn short for a combo.......

Damn, that is short. Now they need to just figure out how to make a thin adapter plate for the SM420. A SM420 with a Novak adapter is just under 15" long.

I would skip the 200 if highway driving is expected. The 200 was made for the M37 Dodge (WWII era) and while being strong the problem is the lack of oiling. My 725 has one and will overheat the tc in 30 to 60 miles.

Wow, that a pretty bad design flaw. How do you know when your transfer case is overheating?

It designed to work at 40 to 50 mph tops before they built the interstates. It yorks the oil out any bad seals and the vents. You have to let it cool and refill. One guy I know has a temp guage hooked up to his drain plug. It hits about 330 to 350.

If your 18 isn the big bearing/shaft model (1.25") It can be drilled and fitted to accept one.
O'Briens 4 wheel west makes some cool sh*t for the 18 and 20's.
