: Pre engine tank...

Here is a neat idea that came from Helocat who also runs one of these in his rig. Basically, it is a small tank that comes after your main tank but before your engine. Main goal is to prevent running out of fuel on different inclines and obstacles. IE stuck on a tall obstacle for a while, then you won't run out of fuel or minorly starve pumps etc.

In my case the fuel pump moves large volume but dumps right back into the tank.

So, I ran my main tank. Then a fuel pump to pre tank, which is a 1.5 gallon tank that was originally used for emissions/ vapor on the '71 FJ55. Here is a photo in OEM configuration that was mounted to body beneath drivers:

The '71 FJ55 main fuel tank has four ports on top of tank, one of which is used as a return, other three originally hooked up to emissions equipment. Then there is a feed, and three ports used for the fuel up and related lines.

My solution was to use three of ports put into a small expansion tank. OEM had two expansion/gas vapor burning storage tanks that were plumbed together. I removed one for simplicity but used three ports on it to three tanks for expansion of fuel if I was ever beyond full and needed space for fuel to go.

Engine feed port from main tank was rerouted to pretank. It fills via an electirc pump.

1971 FJ55 originally came with two "vapor" tanks. One was bashed up so I cut it open and absolutely immaculate inside of it so I knew other would be fine. Attached is photo of tank modified. I also knew because it was clean and had no gas in it (only "vapor" it would be safe to weld to and did test just incase). It originally had two ports, I modified it now had four. Welded bungs into place. I originally thought I'd use JB Weld but abandoned after a thread in general 4x4 I posted about it.

I saw some neat gas tank epoxy from a trucker store on Monster Garage and used that. I used it because welds were not perfect and there were some small leaks no matter how much I tried to patch. Also my welder was too powerful for thin vapor tank, so leaks were not able to be fixed easily.

Here is the setup, I had to weld supports for new tank location. Also increases gas capacity about a gallon and a half total...

Looks and sounds complicated but if I had a decent draing program would be easy enough to map..

OK here we go, this should make more sense...
