I tried the search, and it did not seem to be working, so here is my problem. I finally broke down and decided to change the p/s pump in my 85 fj60 before going to Moab over easter.
I was under the impression that it was a simple process involving a few bolts. However, after 5-6 frustrating hours, the pump is still in its place. The bolt that seems to be preventing removal is on the backside of the bracket, is rather inaccesible by a wrench, and seems like it would hit the exhaust manifold before it would come all the way out.
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated, as going w/o power steering down in Moab isn't too appealing.

I think you can take the pump off and leave the bracket on the block. But I know you can get the bracket off as I got mine on.........somehow can't rember how but it wasnt easy.

I'm in the same boat as Landpimp. As I recall, I couldn't get a box end wrench on it either. Had to carefully apply the open end of the wrench and slowly back it out far enough to wiggle the pump out with the bolt in place. Avoid the temptation to wield the BFH!

Just changed the P/S pump on my 1985 FJ60 this morning. I was not able to back the rear bolt out far enough by any means. I considered a BFH after prying failed, but I couldn't find it right away and I hit on a work-around after staring at the pump and bracket long enough. I loosened the bolt as much as possible, then cut the head off with a hacksaw (careful of the vacuum lines!). The pump easily lifted out. Then I used a 5 inch long, 5/16 inch diameter bolt that goes from front to back, holding the P/S pump in place with washers and a nut in place of the bolt in the back. Much like the way the alternator is mounted, and also the way the Haynes manual shows the pump being mounted. (8mm should also work, but my local hardware store didn't have anything that long in metric). When the 10mm bolt on the right front was tightened along with the new bolt and nut, the pump was held firmly, and it runs quietly without any observable movement. I'll be checking the nut every now and then for a while though...
BTW, I wised up and used a real new Toyota pump this time, after replacing my original with two Carquest pumps, both of which leaked from the front seal within a month of use. After the second, I Did The Right Thing and went OEM, not even bothering to hassle with CQ for the exchange again. Besides, I got a brand new cup and lid that looks really swell under my hood!

isn't that bolt a bugger?! some S.O.B. must have been having a really crappy day when he designed that component for production......NO RICE FOR YOU!!
anyways, had the same issue with mine. thought about cutting the bolt off like DLenzmeier (good call BTW) but for some reason, was just stubborn enough to want to do it by the "book". had to enlist the help of a seasoned professional wrencher who solved the delema by pulling the air filter assembly, and the air rail too I think (it's been awhile), just so he could gain clearance for the wrenches on the backside. worked though......but kind of a pain just to get to that point....
