: Inspired by ranii's "bigger is better" post
toymaniac 01-07-2002, 04:37 PM So what is the number one criteria underlying all the modification descisions you make to your rig??
I personally am a poor college student and my wheelin rig is also my DD, therefore all my modifications have to be safe for the road.
Let's find out what the real majority (ok so it's a biased census but I don't care) of the wheelers are like.
Rubicrawler 01-07-2002, 04:57 PM I use my EB to get me to the trail and back. So I need enough room to carry all my shiat as well as a case of my favorite beverages  (for the camp fire discussions, of course). It fit's my needs nicely. But it'll never be done! I'm always looking for ways to make it more capable, reliable and safe for the occupants.
StinkBug 01-07-2002, 05:00 PM I dont really fit into any one selection, i'm building my rig to go pretty much anywhere and be beaten on, but i still want it street legal (not a DD) and have space for my camping equipment. I do a lot of primitive camping in the middle of nowhere and i like to be comfortable so i have a fair amount of gear depending on time of year, very similar to what Randii does. funny we drive the same rig too, imagine that.
Dallas
BillaVista 01-07-2002, 05:04 PM Didn't see my option on the poll:
"I don't really think about it too much, just go wheel the hardest trails I can find, break or observe limitations, go home, upgrade, go back, conquer, find harder trail, repeat..."
But I don't like the look of tube frames, need it to be street legal (no tow rig) and do need room for 2 kids and 2 dogs!
FULLSIZE 01-07-2002, 05:10 PM you left no middle ground in your poll. i have to carry stuff so i'm not all cut out, but i do have a fuel cell in the rear that takes up space. i did it to gain more clearance under and don't have to worry about my tank. you need one vote in between the second and third. thats my vote.
wheelinjp 01-07-2002, 05:12 PM I can respect the all out tube rigs and no space, which by the way if they want space they can and do fab storage locations such as over head racks and so on. I need room for two kids and a big cooler of uuhhh pop so I am building a bigger rig(yj) to replace the cj5 so I wouldnt be cutting out the rear seating /storage area.I really want to do a 1/4 elliptical but am hesitant for that reason, not DD I have a trailer queen.
brutus 01-07-2002, 05:21 PM   It's my dd so i gotta keep it SAFE :D :D :D :D :D :usa:

Dallas Same here, except I drive a Toy :D:D:D.
randii 01-07-2002, 05:47 PM Where's the slot for:
primary purpose: carting 13-pound hairy dog to new and exciting places where he can pee on trees, shrubs, and boulders? :D
Randii
toymaniac 01-07-2002, 05:56 PM dang you guys are picky. Read ranii's thread and you'll understand the categories differently. Maby I should have made a "I want to make my rig able to compete in ARCA and ride like my honda on the street do everything perfectly" category. :flipoff2: :flipoff2:
mine is a i want to do the hardest trails possible so anything goes but the funny part is i still have room to take every thing i need for a week in the wildernest with my wife and 2 kids. plus it wheels better in the sand dunes and preruns better than any other rig i have ever owned.
funny part is that if i went to the trouble of making it street legal it would probally be safer and work better than alot of the hobbed together junkyard rigs that you call daily drivers that are running around.
although i don't have any chrome i sure do have alot of billet alunimum goodies on the hot rod 4x4.
anyhow so much for stereo types. why not just build the best rig you can personaly afford and enjoy our sport of off-roading.
FULLSIZE 01-07-2002, 06:31 PM well said camo! i'll drink to that:beer:

I will second that:beer:
Paul Gagnon 01-07-2002, 07:49 PM There isn't really a category for me either. Mine is built to do everything poorly. ;) :smartass:
patooyee 01-07-2002, 07:49 PM I didn't fit either. I build it big because it is a direct reflection of my penis . . . :flipoff2:
No, seriously, I build it big because of my personality, mainly. I'm one of those types that, if I do something, it's got to be all the way. No half-ass about it. If I'm building an off-road rig, it's got to be all-out or nothing. I don't have a tow rig, I do have another daily driver, though. I don't know how I'll get it to the trails once I'm done, but I know I'll have a bad-ass rig that is purpose-built. Call me crazy, but it's true.

I think you said it the best camo. It's not about what we all want to build, cause we all want to build a bad a$$ machine. It's about doing the best posible with the resources available.
paniolo 01-07-2002, 09:30 PM Well I'm like a few others...within the parameters of need to carry 2 kids, legal and reliable to drive several hours to the trails since I have no tow rig and able to carry the gear I need for several days of wheeling I want to tackle the toughest trails I can but building on a pretty moderate budget :flipoff2:
X Frosty X 01-07-2002, 09:31 PM I'm w/camo on this one
I want to be able to Go big w/all my bender bro's on the trail, so I do what I have to
I want it BIg Bad and Burly and all the rest takes a back seat, and yes my wife and 2 kids come along and dont mind havin stuff stashed everywhere
as far as doin stuff like the hammers go, I could care less about a Mohome or tenting it, where my head hits the ground is where I stay, but thats just me
I've slept in tents, on Camo's trailer, under camo's triler in a storm, in the moho, 6" from the Fire, in a lazyboy, on the Rig, in the rig and a few other places that I'm embarresed to mention here:D
anyway I like to keep my rigs a DD out of spite for Camo and he knows it:flipoff2:
it's just the way I am
just close enough to keep the cops from REALLY getting pissed
the real question should be Why does having your rig make you happy???
after losing one maybe some of you would take a closer look at why you play this game
for me I like doin Crazy lines, hanging w/my bros, campin w/my chick and BLOWIN SHIT UP
so I'm a Tin:skull: Bender, what else could I be
Well its my DD but i want to make some storage spots in it so i can put down the rear seat and have a little bed. Man i love my 4 runner.
FreakAccident 01-08-2002, 07:17 AM If the girls werent scared to ride in my POS I would use mine as a DD.

Yea!! What he said!
except I was smart enough to stop after 1 kid :flipoff2: :flipoff2:
Big Rich 01-08-2002, 08:14 AM Hell I must be going about this backwards......I've got the tow rig and a motorhome.....but no finished rig (can't decided on which way I want to go)......I think I need 2 rigs.....the flattie for the most extreme trails (set-up like Jeremy Faber's LC)....and the cherokee set-up for trail runs like the con.......I'll drive the flattie and let the wife or son drive the cherokee......now all I need is the $$$$$$$$ to build both
:D :D :D :D
Rich Klein
CalROCS
PS I do agree with my friend Camo....by the way with you coming out to play:question: Victorville, I hope.....
60seriesguy 01-08-2002, 12:39 PM I like to wheel as hard as I realistically can with a daily driver that also pulls expedition duties (38 US states and five countries in 10 years of ownership)...I've been pushing the limit with tougher trails in the last few years, but I still have to drive it to work every day, sometimes in a suit and tie.
EasyXJ 01-08-2002, 01:18 PM I believe it's a moot point, but it's fun to talk about. I'm building the best rig I can with the best equipement I can get my hands on. Sometimes the equipement isn't so good, but I make do. Usually the craftsmanship is way off, but I make do. I'm one of those folks that has to pound Mr. Jones into the grinder and serve him to my buddies for hobo dinners that night :flipoff2: I like watching all the rigs out there, but the super bad ass ones garner my attention the most cuz that's what I'm trying to unconventionally build.
Easy
Grim Reaper 01-08-2002, 01:52 PM Kind of wide open. Mine is a trail rig but it's still street legal. I drive it when the weather is bad or the weather is nice. Full roll cage I sure feel safer in the snow that I do in my Supra.
So I need to be able to run hwy speeds. I also pull a small camper when I do overnight rides so Pulling a trailler 2 hours to Tellico then wheeling for the weekend is common for me. It's a little funky on the street as it is so I'm pretty well at the limit of trail mods that will effect street perforamnce anymore than it is now.
I'm locked on both ends and will shortly be on 35's. Next major mods I'm looking at is Crossover and FI.
BillaVista 01-08-2002, 03:55 PM Camo sed:
why not just build the best rig you can personaly afford
Naaah..I'd rather build the best rig Camo can afford:flipoff2:
60seriesguy posted a pic of his rig.
I really dig that rig, expedition is cool!
