Anybody got any good aftermarket suppliers for bedsides or 4 runner sheet metal? I searched, but maybe am not looking under the right topics. Came up with nothing

Thanks

Yes, it's located at www.sawzalls.com.

I think your chances of finding it aftermarket or new are pretty much nil. Your best bet is to go to a place where rust problems are at a minimum and bring a sawzall. Our shop recently replaced a quarter on a 94 Runner (insurance job of course) and we actually had to order a USED quarter panel through a place in kansas to get the part. Good luck on your venture.

THIS (http://www.alfaparts.net/toyota4r.htm) is the only place I know of. I don't know anybody that's bought from them so don't know about the quality.

Thought it was www.plasma.com
I know of no aftermarket quarters for 4runners. Only option is new or LKQ (aka used)
This belong in the wanted section.
And yes, I know of both an 86 and 92 that are being parted - both rust free CA trucks. Other option is www.car-part.com

Yeah I checked out www. carpart.com, but nobody wants to cut sheetmetal, or they only will sell it to locals.

I also saw the wolf replacement panels, I'm wondering if it includes the flange that the taillight mounts too???

I think I'm down to flying out west & bringing my sawzall. Lucky I have frequent flyer miles

Oh and some of us guys like sheetmetal, unlike you lucky guys out west who can run around without paint and no rust. If we did that here in the east, our trucks would be in a brown pile of dust in a couple days.:flipoff2:

I don't think a 1/4 panel will fit in the overhead bin. :flipoff2:

No, but northwest will accept as baggage up to 60" linear length package. Plus for 80$ oversize charge they will take up to 160" linear length. It's either that, or ship it UPS from the location to my house, then fly back.

This is what I did... ref: http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=3198&highlight=rust+repair

I couldn't find any rust repair patch panels for my 4Runner and I didn't want to spend $150 at a wrecking yard per side so this is how I'm doing it. I cut out all the rust around the wheel wells first. then I took the sheetmetal from my Bob and trimmed it and formed it into little pieces and welded it together. then I ground the welds down and bondod and primed it. Once I get all the body work down I will be painting it like my signature. So far I go the driver side down and I'm half way through the passenger side. I also had to repair a huge gouge on the driver side by using the same method.

http://bbs.off-road.com/wwwthreads_uploads/53-539674-4.jpg

http://bbs.off-road.com/wwwthreads_uploads/53-539675-5.jpg

Also note the only reason way I was worried about the rust was because I live in Oregon which is well known for it "Liquid Sunshine"!

Up here in the Pacific Northwest I see cut up vehicles ALL THE TIME in the wrecking yards that have the good parts sectioned out and sold. the web site above lists new replacement panels for $275 per side. OUCH!!! I know for a fact a wrecking yard would be cheaper than that but you might have a hard time finding a "rust free" one. For one of my projects (xtra cab first gen truck: http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=141739&highlight=xtra+cab+first+gen) I got my local yard to cut the back of a good xtra cab off with glass for $80-$100.

http://tellico.off-road.com/wwwthreads_uploads/1103474-86_xtracab.jpg

So it looks like you have three options:
Buy new replacement panels for $275 each
Final a wrecking yard willing to cut one up for $75-$125 per side (guess).
Or just cut it out and replace it with new metal piece by piece.

When trying to find a wrecking yard I think you need to actually visit them and talk face to face with these guys so they know you are serious and not just fishing off of a phone car. I always seem to get better prices if I'm actually talking to the wrecking yard guys face to face with my toll box in my hand and grubby working clothes on. I think it just gives the appears that you are serious about a purchase.

I actually did the fender trimming like you described already. Now I want to bob the bed and change it over to a truck tailgate, same as what Jon Bundrant did to his red truck. (RIP)

Today I looked into getting OEM sheetmetal.

Truck bed sides for 84~88 LH side, do not exist. 4 runner bed sides are $880.00 a piece.
you can still buy the pick up box rear corners for $174.00 a piece.
You can buy the rear sill plate that the tailgate mounts to for about $200.00:crybaby2: :crybaby2:
apparently Toyota started making sheet metal out of platinum.

Or I can fly out to Pheonix and buy a whole bed for around $400.00

Or better yet, make 'em outa that stuff they make coolers and canoes out of (poly something-or-other) so we can beat the snot out of them on the trail and they pop right back into shape!!!:D :D

Take a section of a front fender and weld that in. It is very close in shape and wheel opening that after you put a little bondo on it no one will ever know...

Avoid bondo as much as possible. It absorbs water. I think "Tiger Hair" does not, but I'm not sure. Ask at the auto store, if you still have a decent one around.

I'll know pretty soon, getting ready to do body work to fix rust. My exhaust was pushed up behind the bumper edge, and the warm wet air rotted that area twice as fast this winter. Also corroded the wiring harness for my tailgate and rear window. I had to cut it out to stop it from shorting out and draining the battery. Gotta replace it now so my windows will work :(

did you look at toyotafiberglass.com?

4runner bedsides that can invisibly grafted onto a 4runner, never rust, and you can take a baseball bat to them. I put them on my 4runner and just love em.

Wow this threads old, I ended up flying out to toyota truck parts in California, chopping the last 12" off a perfect pickup box. Wrapped it in cardboard and shipping it back as carry on:eek: Got some strange looks, but it was rust free, and I have a lot of frequent flyer miles.

I like the way it turned out. We used bedliner to hide my poor body work.

The rust free bed was $650 bucks. Didn't have a pimple on it, but it was the only one they had that was not repaired in the rear end. Seemd a shame to cut it up. Cost me 80$ for shipping, and 25,000 frequent flyer miles.
Some may say it wasn't worth it, but the rest of the truck is now rust free, and being from Michigan, I have a bee up my butt about rust. Hate it with a passion. I ended up building a massive wrap around rear bumper to finish it out so it doesn't get whacked on the trail.

I got some of the "wolf" panels

http://www.alfaparts.net/toyota4r.htm

They are bent on a brake.
They dont have the OEM "compound curves" in them.
A good body person could make them work - but a good body person could also bend them up on a brake.

I never used em...
