: fitting 33's

Trying to fit 33's on a stock '68 FJ40. Anybody have any experience with how many inches I need to lift. I'm planning on a combination of springs and shackle lifts to get the desired height. I spend about 60% on hiway and 40% off, nothing too extreme don't need massive wheel travel.

Ok, we are getting pretty soft over here, but I'll be nice anyway. You can fit 33's with only 1.5" (or less) if you trim the rear fenders. A 2.5 inch lift works well otherwise. Dont get too silly with the shackle length, it will drive like crap! The board has been a PITA to search lately, but, you really should learn to use the search (or Woodys tech site) for the :rainbow: questions like this one. Kyle

Oh yeah! Welcome newbie!:flipoff2:

33x9.50's fit with no lift at all...33x10.50's work well with 2.5" lift.
Nolan, go easy on the "stock guys"...:)
Not everyone is running mog 9's and 40's, tho after watching your truck work, more folks should:cool:

http://www.ih8mud.com - read up

33x9.5 on stock rims fit with no lift.

Otherwise, 2.5" lift - Skyjacker gets good reviews, as does OMe. Also check the HFS stuff from CCOT (yer welcome Nolen... ;) )...I did have 33x12.5's on mine on 10" steelies with stock springs, but the rust and sawzall addressed the clearance problems for me....

33x9.5's no lift, stock suspension on 15x6 wheels, they rub just a tiny bit at full lock in the front, I suspect they would rub quite a bit off road.
http://pic10.picturetrail.com/VOL326/691553/2301795/28497585.jpg

33x9.5 with 2.5 OME suspension, no rubbing.

http://pic10.picturetrail.com/VOL326/691553/1566988/31617497.jpg

I think 33x12.5's might give some rubbing.

Please don't let this section end up like the Toy/Jeep/General sections. No need to bash anyone over here. But thanks for answering his question. At least you didn't say search and end it with that.

By the way, I ran 33x12.5s with 1.5" of lift and they just rubbed the rear inner fenders, but they cleared the outer fender lip. If you have too little backspacing, they may rub the rear fender lips and you will have to trim them.

I say look at the board and decide if it is an appropriate question. I don't think it is a Pirate question, maybe a CCOT or IH8MUD question, just not the direction this board was designed to head.

That said, I hate when folks say SEARCH too.

Either way, I thought it warranted a good old fashioned eye roll.

Anyway, back to the original question, any of the 2.5-4" SUA kits will do the job.

All ride similar and it is the larger tires you will be able to run that will give you the better ride.

I always roll my eyes when I see people respond like Nolan did....everyone seems to forget that we are all at different stages with our rigs...Nolan is obviously way past the 33" tire stage....maybe 33" is all this guy wants...Nolan, post pics of your rig right after you put on your first set of tires....I bet they were not 42" Swampers or 40" MT/R's:flipoff2:
I heard you were running 31" when your were busting all of those birfs in the early days...LOL!!!:D

ROFL!!! 33s is not really a question for here, but there is also a lot of other gay questions, so I guess it can't really be helped.

a friend, and daughter of a POR member (nameless), once told me when I felt small and wimpy since I'm SUA and running 34" that she ran just about anything and had more fun than ever when she was set up like I am.

Sorry for the rant but I didn't realize there was a tire size requirement to be a member of this board:confused: Those people who are pushing limits with 33's now will potentially be the the big dog's sooner than you think.

BTW - BJ - I finally got your stuff in the mail today - look for 'seppo' mail soon (and yes, I've spent time down under and know what the term means):D

I don't see anything wrong with 33's. This guy can throw on an 2.5 lift and 33's. Call a buddy over and throw a lockwrong in the rear and he's got a capable wheeler. It seems to me like the guys that run the big tread and funky suspensions spend a lifetime in there garage and doing research. Nothing wrong with that but years ago those same guys were running 33's or 31'sand wheeling all the time.

IMHO 33's are the perfect start. Wheel the shit out of it and learn how to drive. Work on your ability to drive first. If I jumped into Nolen's rig I probably wouldn't make it half as far as he would and most likely damage the rig. He's just got more wheel time than me.

In conclusion

START SMALL, GET GOOD, GO BIG, KICK EVERYBODY'S ASS!

Thank - You

Butch.... post up some more fun details! :)

I was reading the old collection of Toyota Trails.... seems I remember someone writing in asking if he could put 33's under his 40 :flipoff2:

osteology -- worse part is she never gets stuck! Funny one was getting stuck in a river crossing. Doh! Fj60 comes to pull me out... gets stuck, next was a FJ80, followed by.... well I think we had five cruisers in the water. Then Kristie and TP come over and just pluck us out one by one. :)

For Goose... 33" is the limit. Still plotting on building a TRAIL RIG. :)

Tom,

If you are looking for more Butch stories about me, then I am giving Butch full disclosure to have at it, HOWEVER it will be open season on Butch and I am not sure it will be healthy for either of us.

As for old TT articles, I hope you are not refering to me as I have always had 33's...just went up from there.

As for this thread....what happened to the poor Newb that started it? I hope we did not scare him away with all this drivel.
