I know the 79-88 tansfer cases, top shift, are different from the 89 and up, foward shift, but what are the differences between the transmissions in a 4 banger? Can you swap a early 80's for a early 90's? If so what are the differences? Any info would be great.
ok,
79-83 tranny's are 5in shorter than 84+ models, also weaker by design...
t-cases from 79-95 were offered as top laoders, 79-83 all were top load's with noisy run gears (whatever they are) and 84-95 EFI was a top laod and 84-87 carb was a front load...

Well I have a 89 extra cab and it has w56 and it is front loaded. This I know for sure because I had to work on it yesterday. I found a 84 extra cab for cheap. It has been sitting in my neighbors yard for over a year and hasnt moved. I asked is they would sell it a they only want $800. I know it was running in 2000 when they parked it so what the hell. It would be fun. On my 89 I had gear teeth, about 8, come out of my trany the other day and I am going to take it apart to see where they are coming from. Thought it might be a quick swap until I get the carb cleaned. Just wondering. thanks.

It should be a simple pop & swap for you then.
If its an 84 w/carburation, it should have a G52 tranny/tcase which is frontloaded just like your 89 W56. They should be the same length overall, and the shifters should pretty much line up in the same spots.
