Not to sound like the cheap fawker of the crew, but the last time I bought jerry cans Sportsman's Guide had them for sale, used, for $7 each, so I got seven of them and a spout for under $100 shipped to Arizona. That may not be the price right now, but keep your eyes open, they go on sale fairly regularly, and in case you're questioning used jerry cans, of the seven I bought four had never been used, and all were in excellent condition, minor scuffs from being shelved. I hosed them down with red paint just in case (some states *demand* that gasoline containers be red) and presto.

There is no comparison between the cheesy, screw-top USMC or Blitz cans and the NATO-spec cans; the NATO ones just DON'T leak, although they do get pressurized with temperature/altitude changes and you need to be careful when opening them. Also, they have no bottom lip, so some jerry can holders will not work with the NATO cans.

Last I heard they were about $11 each from Sportsman's Guide, just be warned that they will bombard you with hundreds of catalogs of surplus sh*t that you don't need but will probably buy anyway! :) :)

I also heard of a Unimog dealer that closed a deal for a bulk shipment of NATO cans, then got stuck with them, it's been a while and I can't find the contact info, but they were in the Pacific Northwest and wanted $1-2 a piece if you bought in quantities (50 or more). Maybe a group buy if people are interested? I know there are a lot of you in Northern CA, shipping to one location shouldn't be too complicated.

Good luck, hope this works!
