: ...strong enough for a recovery point?

Would a piece of 1.5" 1/8" square tube be strong enough to drill though and put a clevis hook in, for a recovery point? What about if the hole was sleeved, would that make much difference? Assuming the peice of tubing was properly placed/attached of course...
(hope that question was reasonably coherent, it's past my bedtime :p)

TIA

The front recovery points on GMC CUCV army trucks were 1.5" .250 wall tubing sleeved through the front bumper and bolted to the frame.
End -on I would have to believe that it would work, but I would go thicker (just because I always tend to overbeef things like this..)
Sleeving through it would also be reccomended...

I don't use anything samller than .25" on anything that will be potentially used as a recovery point. The point of attachemnt for my rear clevis is 3/8" flat bar, welded to my .25" wall bumper w/gussets.

I wouldn't trust it... 1/8" is pretty damned thin for the loads during a recovery

lots of other things to factor but a general answer is NO.

example. how far will the hole be from the end of the material, what are you attaching it to, what angle will the load be pulled from, how hard are you gonna pull. better be safe than sorry and go big.

Points well taken, thanks for the help guys. I'm not even 100% sure they'd fit where I'm looking to put them, but I thought the strength issue needed to be addressed before I started getting too involved in the rest of the project.
I took some pictures this morning, would anybody be willing to post them for me, so ya'll can see exactly what I'm talking about? If not I can see about throwing them up on a webpage over on my geocities site...

For a "straight away" pull, probably. For a side loaded pull, I doubt it.

Beef it up and do it once.
