So if all I keep of my truck is part of the frame and the Tcase... is it still a Toyota? :p

Damn!! you going to a full buggie now? Got that JD, and you want to go crazy with it huh?
No hood, cab, doors, etc.? I would have to say nope it's not. It's a "hybrid" or whatever. :D Who cares what it is, it will kick ass hopefully.

Beats me. I'm still trying to decide the year and make of mine. The only original part of my '83 still in use is the rear driveshaft, and maybe the t-case. Everything else is a different year or make or model.

It doesn’t matter, because you’re still representing a toy.

I disagree, I like Toyotas for their awsome drivetrain. Ask anyone
from the rust states and they'll tell you that toyota bodies are their worst downfall. I am going to try to keep mine all toyota as long as possible, but thats just me. I see nothing wrong with building hybreds, but a toyota cab on a chevy drivetrain is a chevy in my book. So, my opinion would be, if 50% of the powertrain is one make, I woiuld call it that.

Chevota? Toylet?:D
In retrospect, I guess whatever someone calls their creation when they refer to it, is what it is. That is one of the cool parts of building a custom vehicle. :usa: :)

I would say mine is buggy/toyota 4 runner, All that is left of my body is the cab. The front end and rear right behind the cab are gone and it is all tubing know and i am probably going bigger axels. But I am not sure yet. I woul still have a toy engine and tranny and t-case, so i would say mine is going to be a ruggy

You truck is no longer a toyota when you take out its heart and soul and transplant in a non-toyota motor.

The motor is the sweat, blood, heart and mind. Everything else is like prosthetics additions.

The 6 million dollar man and the Bionic woman were still the same person before. Robocop was mostly the same person. The mechanica perfomance was just much better.

But for all that is holy, don't remove what makes it a toyota.

Interesting...

So conversly, if I took my BONE STOCK 1987 Toyota 4Runner and swapped in a Chevy 4.3L, and kept everything else BONE STOCK - are you saying that is no longer a Toyota?

...What's the essence of a Toyota?

...You take a Runner, and swap in a 4.3, auto, 60's and coil it.

You're now running only the Toy body, frame, and x-case. It's still a Toyota, right?

When you talk about the part that (we all think) makes a Toy the best, two things usually come up: Body/frame width, and x-case. Almost NEVER do you hear of someone swapping OUT a Toy x-case, right? (Except maybe for an Atlas or something else obscenely strong :D)

So, the things that make a Toy kick ass are its x-case and frame.

Conversely, if you swap a Toy xcase into a Nissan or a Jeep, it's still a piece of shi... Errr, I mean Nissan or Jeep. :D

...And my best example: Take away the bun, the lettuce, the onions, the mustard, the mayo and the ketchup... And it's still a fawkin' hamburger. :D If the BEEF is still there, it's still a burger, you know what I mean?

...So I think as long as you use the Toy frame, and the x-case, it's still a Toyota... At least in spirit. :D

But that's just my opinion. :p

I seem to recall you stating somewhere that brand loyalty was overated, but I could be wrong. So, why are you worried if it is gonna be considered a Toyota or not.

Since it is your rig you can call it what you like

However, IMHO, it should at least .APPEAR to look like a Toyota if it is to be classified as a Toyota.

What do I know

My motto is, use what works and call it whatever it started out being. I put together a bone stock 1980 toyota. A year later I still have part of the cab, frame, the engine, trans., and triple cases, but my axles are chevy and suspension is ford, and it just doesn't look much like a toy anymore, but i'm still gunna call it a toy. ; - )

i still call mine a toyota and all i have left is a 1/2 a toy frame, the steering box, transfer case and the ujoints from the drive lines.

and all those parts have been reworked by:steering box modifyed by jeff how for ram assist, transfer case by marlin and drive lines by high angle. come to think of it i don't have a single stock toy part on the rig. :D

to answer your question, when you stop calling it a toyota.

I called my rig a toyota until Sunday evening when I cut off the cab, and most all of the remaining body work. Now I like to refer to it as a buggy(in progression)- to me that just means
1. It isnt street legal
2. I am building my own ride
3. parts can be whatever as long as they GET IT!
4. brand loyalty doesn't matter.
so what is it? weldpros' buggy but it does use alot of toyota parts:D

guess I'd better change my sig!

Frame and t-case huh?

Maybe I should start a new project with that.
How about "Project Toyframe"?

I personally think it's the cupholder that defines the ride!

:usa:

Six years ago a buddy of mine got busted with his lifted Toy

He was sporting 4" IFS lift, 3" body, and 33" tires. The State Trooper
told him that the truck was no longer a Toyota.

According to that statey, once a vehicle is modified from stock
(different than factory) it is no longer considered that brand of vehicle
by the law. So what is it my buddy asked? He said that truck was now a Bob N. creation
named after the owner.

So he let my buddy off for a warning of next time he got busted he would
receive the $650.00 ticket he was getting out of that night.

The next week he cranked up the torsions, added a add+leaf to the rear
and put some 36" Swampers on there. He didn't like authority telling him what
to drive and neither do I.

First off, that Statey is an idiot :p

Secondly, you would only WISH he was correct. Because if it was a "Bob N. Vehicle", then you could simply tell them that was STOCK, and they could then never fine you for lifted vehicles...

That heart and soul BS is just that. I have a Dodge 2500 with a Cummins, it is still a Dodge. A Chevy HD with an Isuzu diesel and Alison transmission is still a Chevy, Fords diesel is made by Navstar. I also have a completely stock 63 Nissan Patrol. The engine, and probably other parts, is an exact copy of a Chevy six cylinder, even the parts numbers evidently. It's still a Nissan. Your ride is what you want it to be.

Adgain, the Heart and Soul BS is just Sarcasm, this thread is full of it.

My real opinion, is where your loyalty is. If it somehow resembles a toyota, your your loalty is to toyota, then by golly, let it be a toyota, even if if looks like a Jeep :barf:

Its still a toyota when the title says it is :-) Just don't let those fawkers check out your rig and see its no longer an 8? Toyota pickup truck or try to get you with an assembled vehicle bs thing.

Check out my rig? I could title it as a tractor and still drive it on the road.. this is TENNESSEE!!! :p:p:p:p

But alas, I may not have ANY Toyota on it if some new plans work out  check the general board and see what I mean ;)
