did you use the rear glass to mold the fiberglass? whats with the wood underthe top, did you use that?

ya know what would be cool? a hinged piece of speed glass on either side. with a foam rubber seal around the inside, a simple latch, and the ability to just fip them so they lay flat on the top of the top when you dont want to use them and another latch or something so they will stay. shouldent rattle when closed, cause of the rubber foam seal. im sayin speed glass cause its safer for the kids, or anyone.:D down side? probably $200 for each side.:(

:D

I cut the bottom off cuz I have a kid that climbs in and out of the rig when the top is off from the sliders. Easier to get into the back seat.
If the framework(fiberglass) was left there, not good!
I have the Kayline top sides from my old top. I just haven't thought of a way to mount them that will be;
a. easy
b. quiet
c. cheap!
I am exploring several ideas.
I like the openess personally. great sideview when driving, no blindspots.

if you fill the sides & move the snaps to the body all you need is the front.im going to use 2in x1/8in flat plate mounted to the top.im not going to cut the front sides off

Nice work and good idea.

But...

The canback is lighter. Why do this?YES the can back is lighter but the windows are small & the back window isnt glass easy to clean & see.also the windows in the can back dont come off so after 2yrs my windows where scratched up from trees inside & out from being up & down.they stay on the side of the rig all the time these i can remove & pute in a bag.
The glass in the top is 42lbs i think i lost 50 to 55lbs

I would like to see pictures of the inside, where the rear top glass curved and the bottom part where the top sits on the truck. Also the area where the top bolts onto the cab of the truck.

Thanks ... RCRunner

Hrmm, would anyone be interested in a tonneau cover for the 4Runner's? I'm thinking simple and quick vinyl with a standard pickup size rear window portal. Bolt onto stock mounting. Tricky part is getting around the roll bar and maintaining a good seal. Sanyway, just a thought that I felt like adding to this creative top thread :)

There's a good vinyl shop nearby UFO I think.

Howabout a top that goes over the part behind the rear seats... making it sort of a double cab sorta thing... i'd buy one of those...
For the roll bar you can have a cut out that stays permanantly around the rollbar with a zipper on it, that zippers to the top when you put it down (give me your email and i'll send you a crude paint drawing of what i mean)

I've got a tonneau cover on mine that goes behind the rear seats. The previous owner made it. It looks really nice and keeps all my gear and speakers hidden while I'm parked.

He made a thin metal rail (1/8" or less, by about 2") that bolts into the stock holes, and then this has button snapps on it. Then theres another rail screwed into the back seats behind where the plastic trim goes, and one more paice screwed into the tailgate. To go around the roll bars there is just a cutout in the vinyl. Its not weather proof, but it doesn't really have to be since the top is off and the rear seats are exposed anyway.

It works great and looks nice too :D

compared to the factory top...how much lighter is this one? this top by far is the best one i've seen. you can take sides off, roll factory window up and down, no holes drilled into truck, able to use rear wiper, cheaper than a canback, sweet!

I was thinking about making a canback style frame and top when I came across this thread. I went and got an extra top, and got out the sawzall. Here's where it's at so far:
http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p193/thewizard182/DSCF0041.jpg

I'm thinking of cutting out some of the roof of it so it's easier to jump over the side and into the back, just not sure if what's left will be strong enough. I might fill in that back portion for some strength, might even just reuse the piece i would be cutting out of the front. I would then also have to make a soft top to cover it up and make it water proof.
Quick chop:

i know this is an old post but if you still have this vehicle got any pics of the tonneau. i was thinking of doing the same thing cuz in the city stuff tends to get stolen with no top on!!!!
