: Ford RC Dana 44: Exactly what yr/make/model do I find it in?
RSQJEEP 01-08-2002, 09:26 AM Well, I posted this on the Ford page and got conflicting info. Maybe the Jeep guys know....
I'll be putting the Ford reverse cut Dana 44 front in my YJ.
Is the only year that the Ford 44 RC the 1977 1/2 - 1979?
Is it in the F-150, F-250 or F-350?
Regular cab, extra cab, or supercab?
Caster angles?
Here's the skinny: I need it to fit leaf springs. Need open knuckle, RC, driver drop, 30 spline shafts, and disc brakes.
I looked at the axle list that has been posted, but it does not list whether or not the axles are reverse cut or not...
Any site to look at for Ford axle specs {besides Ptropers(?)}?
The local junkyards (who I think are morons :mad3: ) said I have to id whether or not it is: 1/2 ton, regular or super cab, and from a FT or PT t-case. Although, the guys on the Ford board said cab doesn't matter.
Grandpa Jeep 01-08-2002, 10:19 AM I've heard that they come in earlier F-150s (I think you posted that once), but I've never actually seen a RC axle in an earlier truck. F-150s haven't had leaf springs since the early 60s so if you want one with spring pads, you're going to have to look at F-250s. I've also heard some supercab F-250s have D60s rather than D44s, and all F-350s have D60s. 80-97 F-150s and F-250s are going to be TTB.
redruM 01-08-2002, 10:20 AM any solid axle ford will be a 44 or a 60 both are HP and the 60 is worth $$$$$
G.C. Bandit 01-08-2002, 11:03 AM You have the years right. The f150 has coils i believe in the front, so some mod will be required. The F250 have the leaf spring pads already welded on and ready to go, along with the 1 ton brakes. The F250 somethimes and F350 are dana 60.
66CJdean 01-08-2002, 02:06 PM 77.5-79 3/4 ton are the best ones to get because they are setup of leafsprings. 78-79 3/4 Supercab's had 60's but the axles wernt much better than the 44 ones. An F150 will work and the 77.5-78 ones are the easyer ones to use but they have the C-bushing crap on the tubes that will need to be removed.
liveaxle 01-08-2002, 02:30 PM What Dana 44 did Ford use before the year 1977.5? Why are these not desirable?

They used a standard cut D44. Nothing wrong with them, just not as desireable as the reverse cut D44.

NOPE:flipoff2: Some late model Fords use solid axle Dana50's

Sorry, no such thing. The only other HP axle is the D30 used on XJs, YJs etc. And they are driver's drop as well.
WillyPete 01-09-2002, 07:23 PM so all HP 44s are fords, and are also driver's drop?
bleh... i might as well just swap in a front pass drop 60 instead of go to the trouble of fabbing a HP44 pass drop axle.
ok, next question... do Dana 60s have better ground clearance than an AMC20?

Hey Willy,
If you want a Pass side axle, use a Scout or Waggoneer and do a Spring over. If you don't feel like dealing with the SO, use a Chevy 44 but have it narrowed. The Chevy will bolt right in with a little bit of fudge factor.

Edit: I just saw that you have a Waggy already....Get a Chevy and run it full width!
