: Blower air filter question

Hey all you cruiser heads,

Talking about a 73fj40

At one point when I first turned on my heater after the purchase of my cruiser chunks of what looked like to be a foam air filter of sorts blew out of my heater unit at me. This lead me to believe that somewhere there should be some little foam-like air filter to help keep dust to a minimum when using the fan blower.

My question is this.

Where did the foam filter fit? Between the blower, firewall, and the plastic blower screen?

Or is there one that can be placed between the blower and the exterior body panel slats for air filtration?

If any of you have replaced it let me know where it goes and the materials you used. I am thinking about just cutting an air filter foam element to size as an ideal replacement. Of course as soon as I figure out where the hell to put it.

Oh and one more question. You know those rubber defrost hoses on both sides of the heater that lead up under the dash. Where the hell does the air come out from them to defrost the windshield? Inside? Or Outside?

There is no air filter for the heater duct. There is however a foam filter media that is attached to the fresh air door that acts as a seal to prevent air from coming in while it is closed and to stop the rattle between the 2 pieces of tin.

As far as the the defosters go, the air goes though the hoses up to the inside of the windshield frame. If you look up under the dash, you will see 2 ports that the hoses attach to.

No filter on any models I have ever torn apart, they used some 1/2" strips to seal the gaps in the ductwork. take the supply tube, (firewall to plenum) off, and the strips went on either end of this piece, I would imagine it would be easy to sandwich a section of home ac filter in there. all air that somes thru the heater comes from outside, since the blower is out under the hood.........piece of piss mate!!

So what would you call that 1/2 inch foamy strip sealy stuff? Could I find that stuff in a hard ware store under some sort of name? Perhaps looking under the electrical section?

I only say so because I've been cleaning the dried cracked crap off all around where the blower attaches to the fire wall. It was shot to hell and back again.

Thanks for the helpful replies

PS Oh thats where the defrosting air goes! I knew it went up the tubes into the sockets connected to the dash. But I had no idea where it went next.

Use any foam tape like you use around windows, in the home, Over here it comes with a pull off tape, like a decal. Or the foam like you use to seal a camper top to the bed of a pickup.
