Okay I searched but maybe not the correct words but I can going to be painting my 203/205 doubler and tranny soon and I am wondering what paints work the best for something like this.

I would like to paint them all red to see any cracks or leaks but do you prime them first or just have at them paint or should you use Engine paint?

IMO the metal is so permeated with oil nothing is going to stick well so don't waist your time with anything spendy. Rattlecan is the way to go and it is up to you if you primer them or not.

Don't know about the red, but I've been using duplicolor gloss black ceramic paint on axles and am very happy with its durability. Just prep the hell out of the metal, and shoot it on. Let it sit for about 72 hours before you shoot it again. Very wear resistant and real good shine.

If you wanna be real fancy a dual component direct to metal (Carboline 890 as an example) epoxy will probly work best. No priming, will go on thick and fill in the pore's to give a smooth finish, it will stick to almost anything, and this stuff is hard as the hobs of hell, I'v put it on floats and driven escavators over it and it stays on. Only drawback to this stuff is it will fade or turn chaulky when exposed to UV. But it should'nt see alot of UV under the truck.

Guess that all depends on what kind of driver you are :flipoff2:

The kind of driver that worrys about red paint on the driveline usually won't have to worry about UV I'm guessing.:flipoff2:

FIRST of all...to look for leaks, you usually want to have light colour...say white or yellow...

but...when you cover with paint, your paint may HIDE small cracks that you end up only seeing when they go all to hell on the trail and you are screwed...
I would NOT paint, but just keep things cleaned up really good, and check it all over periodically if you are afraid of damage

you could radius over any hard lines inside and out and polish it all...believe it or not cracks can start with a nick on an edge where stress will get intensified...no, I don't mean Bling Bling polish, just smooth

just a thought.....oh! nsd if you do paint, there are thin paints out there that stick good and will not cover up any cracks...try that powder-coat kit from harbor freight for example...it really works and is on sale half off every coupla months..

honestly tho i have used this stuff on a gear box before and it does hold up pretty good.... also it's semi transparent so you can still see very fine crack's thru it.
