Hey I know it makes me a C/B here, but as I have the heads off now, I've decided it's really not a GOOD idea to go through all the trouble of re-installing with that burned piston, so.....as I really don't want to put a NEW $85+(edit: $104.00) piston in an engine that I may be tearing out by next year for a 4.2
I figure I can drop the pan in situ, undo the big-end bolts on #3 and pop the piston up, than install a nice used stock piston with NEW rings into the bore that I will obviously be honing as soon as I find a bottle-brush hone(hate the tripod ones!)
Anyone(preferrable in close to central CA to expedite the whole thing) ahve any good 3.9 stock pistons?
also suggstions for single piston ring set instead of geetting eight and having seven spares that I will NEVER use?
Paul(I corrected all teh dang The mispellings for you winers..it's a brain-hand issue I guess..)

I just went thru the single ring set BS last week.
I'm building a AMC 360 that is +60. I snapped a compression ring on install and couldn't find a single set. I just ordered a Chev 400 +30 single ring set and just did a file fit of .005

ok...must be dazed 'cause I just walked a mile home from carpool as I don't see what that does to help me! :flipoff2:
...but seriously, I have not ordered single rings before and havn't check teh local hot-rod machine shops...guessing they will be the best? what chevy or ford piston is same size as rover 3.9? I do NOT have my books to check as they ae deeeeeeep in storage until I can buy a place later in year, so am sorta screwed...I have not done this for a looong time, cept on motorcycles...and wiseco takes care of all that..
...but still need to find a good stock size piston.

The 3.9 has a bore of 3.7. I'm not sure of it's compression ring thickness but here are both common sizes:
Buick 225 V6 bore 3.75" rings are 5/64,5/64,3/16
Chebby 265 V8 bore 3.75 rings are 1/16,1/16,3/16

I could be persuaded to find a single piston worth using in your rig. Just use the rings that are on it. What do you have to trade?
I also have a serpentine belt 4.2 runner I may part with. I got a powerstroke diesel TGV to use in place of it.

trade? hmmm! not sure what you NEED! (especially that you need that you may not realize it? ]:flipoff2:
...but seriously...hmm! guessing my spare genuine discovery rear door grab handle will be of no use to you.... :D

I've got an entire 1989 rover 3.9 that we pulled out of a rangie I had. It ran awesome until a friend borrowed it and ran it low on oil so it spun a rod bearing. I was going to rebuild it, but now it's gotta go. Want the whole engine? It should have lots of usable spare parts for a CB rebuild of another 3.9 or it would be perfect for a re-build on the bench and then stuff it in a rig for minimum downtime. I haven't laid eyes on it in a bit so I don't recall what all is still attached to it, but it is basically the whole engine minus ancillaries and MAF. The Fuel rail and intake are intact and the bottom end was never pulled apart. If you want it, I can check for more details.
