I am attempting to get my 84 toyota truck with EFI from an 87 smogged. The smog referee says since the fuel injection is from an 87, that he has to smog the whole vehicle as an 87. One problem with this for me is that I have Thorley headers smog exempt for an 84 truck. He won't smog it with the headers on there because they aren't smog exempt for an 87. My Engine and my truck are both 84's. I can't put 85+ headers on my truck because my exhaust ports are different. He said that I need to put a stock 84 exhuast manifold back on. Am I the only one that this doesn't make sense?? This is the only referee in the Sacramento area, besides one in N. Natomas. There are none in Placerville or anything where I would think they would see more engine swaps. What did you guys do when you swapped to fuel injection?? Suggestions??

Unfortunately if you want to pass the visual insp your gonna have to put the stock manifold back on the truck. Since you put a 87 EFI in your truck it has to meet 87 smog/equipment requirements. The referee won't budge on that!!!

How the Fu@K does he know it's an 87 EFI and not and 84 EFI, you didn't tell him did you? That baffles me, but what do I know about EFI, I LOVE Quadrajets :flipoff2:

What's different about the 85+ Headers? Do they have all the smog provisions. Do you know someone who has those headers? Maybe you could "borrow" his EO# and claim that the one you have is an '87.

How about putting the origional Fuel intake system on it, get it smogged and swap back? A lot of work I know, but it's better than not driving the thing at all.

After the past post it occured to me that maybe they didn't come with EFI in 84

PS: GOOD LUCK IN SCREW_YA_FORNIA :D

EFI started in 85, so I don't think it would have mattered if I told him 87, or 85, still the same problem. Oh well, I guess I'll just have to throw a stock manifold back on, I'm missing the lower half of it tho, so hopefully one of my buddies will have one tonight, I have an app. for the smog ref tomorrow....what a PITA

There is no difference, they both have 02 sensors, just they have a different pattens, the 85+ have oval shaped exhaust holes, while the 22r's had round ones. So I CAN'T bolt up an 87 exhaust, that's why I think it is so stupid. I have to put 84 exhaust on it anyway, because thats the only thing that will bolt to my engine, why require me to put the stock manifold on?

To make an appointment call 1800-622-7733, I was talking to John Baltazar who is the Regional manager, his phone is 418-5214.

That's why I suggested you try to pass it off as an 87 exhaust by using an '87 EO number. Do you think the referee would know the difference? I realize it's not exactly legal, but it might work.
