Bear with me there are some questions in here...

I am about to head off to work in Europe for a couple of years, and I am going to use it as an opportunity to obtain the parts I need to build my Sals/D60 front, most likely with 101 CV's.

I don't like my chances of finding a second hand front, (and shipping it back to OZ) so I will probably be converting a rear 4.7 series salisbury (dirt cheap) when I get home.

Now the 101CV's and R&P's are very cheap over your side of the world, but I want to know what I can run and what the exact differences are between a genuine D60 and a sals. BillVista's bible says there are 2 carriers/center chunks - one for 4.1:1 and lower (numerically) and one for 4.56 and higher. So does anyone know if this is the same for the sals??? if I buy 101 CW&P's (5.57? or 5.4:1) can I bolt them on my 4.7:1 carrier??? and if I buy even lower D60 gears can I bolt them on???

I already have a rear Salisbury with Maxi Drive HD axles and locker (only 24 spline but holding up OK so far - will upgrade to 30 spline if needed). I will probably get Mal to build the axles and locker for me when I get back and build the casing, and I may even try and make the new swivels myself - but we will see. Ike or anyone else - what happened to your plan to buy some of these from mal for a series application???

Ideally I would love to buy 4 101 CV's and convert my truck to 4 wheel steer but that might be beyond my budget.:D

Ben

Where is Europe are you going to be based ?

Salisburies are the same, there are two carriers, and two different ARB's one for 3.54 and one for 4.7

I've got a spare of each carrier after pillaging axles and diffs to get 2 x 4.7 ARB's

I was told that the 101 gears bolt straight to the 4.7 carrier.

101 gears was my original plan, but I'm finding 4.7's plenty low with 35's and auto.

I don't think it would be /that/ difficult to build a front axle from a rear. If you get yourself to Southern England, you can take measurements off of mine ;)

You could probably find a leafer front Salisbury in the UK after a while, but finding a coil front at sensible money was a challenge.

Ben, the difference in the carrier is the position of the face that the ring gear bolts to.

Im still palnning to build up an ENV with those swivels and 101 FC CVs, but I bought some rovers that are taking all my time and money so its been on the back burner. You could always just get a pair of 101 axles and save yourself some headache. They are wide but not super wide.

Hi Andy, I read through the installs on your site, very informative. Let me know when you break the first AEU2522 CV. Mine have held up well so far, but I don't have a locker yet. Lots of mates have broken them with 33" and 35" wheels with lockers.

Southern Germany

I was told that the 101 gears bolt straight to the 4.7 carrier.

That's good to know, then that Sals carrier is probably the same as the D60. Can anyone else confirm??

I might just do that when I am in the UK, Cheers!!!

Since the IIA I am putting it in is a leafer, that wouldn't be too bad, but I wouldn't mind a coiler-width axle for a wider track.

Yep, I though that, cheers. But do you know if 4.7 and 5.57 use the same carrier, and if the 4.56 and higher D60 gears will fit??? Noone I have asked seems to know for sure. And also is the pinion spline the same.

Yep I know what you mean - $$$ are the reason I haven't built mine yet. That and I won't be able to drive it for a couple of years now - I think I will get withdrawl symptoms soon.

The FC101 axles would be pretty good if I could find some for the right price and get a good deal on shipping.

I have a 101 front axle in my 109 and it uses d60 4.56 gears but uses an ARB carrier. The pinion splines are different from the salsbury pinion to the d60 pinion. Salsbury carrier is not the same as the d60 its better having a 4 pin design to the d60s 2 pin, the d60 gears will bolt to the salsbury carrier.

Cheers that was exactly the info I was looking for. So what pinion flange do you use?

myself and a mate were doing an orienteering comp once, and we both broke a CV within about 10 seconds of each other, both running with 7.50x16's!!! (mind you, it was on full steering lock and we both had our front ARB's engaged)

Now I am in Germany the hunt is on for the bits. If I could get a reliable 4.7:1 or 5.57:1 CW&P for a toy minitruck I would be tempted just to do the toy 30spline front conversion, but Rover R&P ratios are completely different to everything else so I think I will just do the front once and do it properly.

Sorry for the typos, German keyboards are weird äÄüÜß.

that would be more reason to install a torsen diff :flipoff2: would have liked to done this myself but I gave up due to the costs and complexity. in the face of those two variables a used detroit was hard to beat :D

Just an FYI...

I have an ARB for a Salisbury 101 axle. I had the side gears hogged out and re-splined and re-hardened by Dutchman (they make the axles for WARN).

The locker and sidegears are currently FOR SALE.

E-mail if interested.

Ben,
have a clicky here http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2474243205

It'll bolt straight into the IIA.

Just bring it on back as hand luggage.

:D

That Salisbury front end looks identical to the closed knuckle D60 front end of a M715 the US military used to use..... and I know you can get those DIRT cheap.

How big are the CV's (or more likely UJ's) and shafts in the M715??? A longfielded 101CV would be just about unbreakable in any crawling application IMO.

Thanks for all the replies guys. I don't mind the bobtailed luridly painted rangies. There are a lot of them in comps in Australia. Though usualy with much safer cages than the one in the first pic!!!

100GBP is cheap! just the cost of shipping to Australia (that was why the original plan was to buy the CV's etc). Will look into my options... Ideally If I am buying complete axles I would buy two fronts, swap the tubes on the 'rear' one and have four wheel steer.

Oh and thanks for the offer Tom, but I better get used to this one as they are about to get me a $$$$ notebook and I don't think I can get one with an Aus/US keyboard.
