My CJ taps loud when its cold. I was thinking oil pump but it seems good. My pressure guage went out today, but it seems good. It runs fine once warm. Should I be able to hear the valves clicking when its cold. I know theres not much of a firewall but is this normal on anyone elses 258?
Also, I need to see some pictures of 258s with the valve cover off. Or pics of the valve cover gasket. I cant find a gasket to fit for some reason!
Thanx :roxy:

I've got 154K on the 258 on my YJ and, although it's very very tired, it still runs fine with no valve tap, cold or otherwise.
My guess is that you just need a valve adjustment.

IIRC the 258 uses non-adjustable hydraulic lifters. So it's not a valve adjustment problem. Could it be a sticky lifter? You might try a can of that lifter-unstick stuff and see if it helps.
As for the valve cover gasket, there isn't one. It uses RTV sealer only.
Oh, and welcome newbie :flipoff2:

So what are the gaskets they sell for 258's?
Are they just wall decorations?:flipoff2:
I have one and thats what it has been for quite a while...RTV properly applied works for some..those plastic VC's are a bitch though.

Change your oil and add a quart of Marvel Mystery oil. You probably just have some crap in one of the lifters. :smokin:

About all I can do to it is get used to it. :D Or get a louder stereo, I hear that helps.
I dunno, it just seems like my motor has ALWAYS done this. Always did it since I bought, stopped for a year or so after i rebuilt the motor, but now its right into it again. Just knocks real bad when its cold, but then goes away when its warmed up.
It doesn't appear to do anything detrimental to the rig, so I just ignore it. Probably not the best/smartest thing, but oh well.

not sure if the 258's used the sme thing or not, but when my AMC 304 had the same problem it was because the rocker bridges were worn down, and allowed too much slop in the rockers. I cheated a little and took small amounts off the bottom of the bridges on the visibly worn ones, and it quieted right down. don't take too much off if you do this, or it will hold the valves open. eventually I wil either buy a new set of bridges, or have the heads machined to take rocker arms like a Ford cylinder head takes. I have seen a writeup somewhere on it, but I need to find it again.

I guess the gaskets they SELL are wall decorations, but what about the gasket on there already? It has one, but nobody can find a match. And I am a newbie and I dont know half the things I should about engines so feel free to bash all you want... as long as I get the info I need. In a moron's terms... what do I do to check my oil pump and such for problems that might make this sudden noise? (I dont even know where the oil pump is).
Thanx, from one jeeper to another
I know how to break stuff, now im learning how to fix them.

I just went to the local Napa. And got one for mine.
If you can find a aluminum vc then replace it .
