My brother recently took a trip down to Nicaragua and took some pictures of a couple of Toyotas he saw. Interesting to note: a majority of the toyota trucks made in foreign countries are diesels that still have solid axles up front. Need a red star members e-mail addy I could send these pics too so you doods can check em out

Well that's nice....Being that there are handfulls of pbb members that are not in this country, and have posted pics of theses, deisel straight axle late model rigs......did you know a lot of them are 4 door trucks. did you happen to see any of the war coverage in iraq, which had video of these vehicles driving on the streets. don't need any pics, just look up toyota websites from different regions other than north america.:p

the majority of vehicles used outside of North America are diesel. The price of petrol in most foreign countries makes building gasoline engines prohibitive.

i think the last straight axle trucks were made in '97 or '98. south africa even kept the '84-88 body style until 1997

some places the more upscale(e.g. sr5) models had IFS, while the entry level models were straight axle. it's a shame they don't still do this, especially in north america

Way to burst my bubble you bastid!:flipoff2: Just thought it was interesting to see double cab 3rd gens with older body style beds and Tacomas with older body style beds as well. The name "Hi-Lux" is still used for their pickups even to this day

Lots of info on my Foreign Toyota page for anyone that is interested:

http://www.brian894x4.com/FOREIGNTOYOTAMAINPAGE.html

A couple of points:

The solid axle Hilux was actually last produced in 1997.

The last solid axle 80 series was sold in 1998, although they are actually still in production in Venezualia (sp?) for that very small market.

Although most current model 100 series are IFS, they actually do make a few that have solid front axles. They are typically called the 105 series and are basicly a 100 series on an 80 series chassis.

There are still several 70 series models that are produced today around the world. The most famous is the 78/79 troopie and pick-up version found in Australia/South Africa and elsewhere. The shortwheel base 70 series is still sold in South America and Japan gets a less known 77 series which is basicly a nicely outfitted 4 door wagon.

The Hilux and Tacoma are not related in anyway, except a similier looking body and interior. The current generation Hilux uses the same frame and suspension as our '95 and older IFS trucks.

And a little tidbit: Toyota continued to build the 1984 body style trucks for South Africa through 1997, so you if you ever visit there, you'll see trucks made in the 1990s that look like our mid 1980s Toyotas.

here in germany there was never sold a solidaxled Hilux.
we also still use that name, singlecabs with 4x4 werent sold either. only xtra and dubblecabs are availeble with 4x4

but there are a few solidaxle hilux here, mostly imported from switzerland, netherland, austria.
most are dubblecabs with diesel, the singlecabs with 4x4 are very rare, i have one, and its worth something like 8000$ ist a 87model, i know of only 4!! 2.gen hilux and something like 6
1. gen who are representiv in the internet.

its very hard to find parts, i am looking since 1 jear for doors, so i can make halfdoors, but there is no way to find some:(

The U.S. was not the only country to lose all solid axle mini-trucks in 1986, but the solid axle was still available in most other countries.

IFS was actually available all over the world in 1986, but outside the U.S. was mostly only on upscale models.

And for Europe, dont' forget the VW Taro. The Taro was an exact copy of the Toyota pick-up, built by VW under license, between 1989 and 1997. They weren't built on Toyota assembly lines, they were actually built on VW assembly lines, I believe in Germany, and had VW badging. They were built with both solid axle and IFS. Mostly only sold in the European markets.

Hi Brian

jep the taro, but he didnt sell very good.
why sould i buy a copy and pay more when i can get the original cheaper ;)

but i never saw or heard of a solidaxle taro in germany.
i know a few people who have a taro, but changed the steeringwheel, grill and tailgate , so nobody sees that they drive VW :D

the taro´s are not so wantet, gues what the are missing is ...
the spirit

VW had more sucsess with the caddy , its a litle pickup based on the golf (rabit) it was cheap but never hat 4x4
a lot of kompanies bought them.
