The fuel gauge on my 87 runner works fine till 1/2 full then drops to empty within a few miles. But if I incline the truck the gauge goes back up again for a minute or two. I was thinking of replacing the sending unit until I found out it was $160 at Toyota. Napa does not even carry them. Is there a more reasonable source for these or am I still going to do the odometer tracking method? Amazingly a new fuel pump at the dealer was only $97, so I was thinking of replacing the old one (175k). 97 for the pump and 160 for the sending unit, maybe the parts guy is confused.
Anybody have a good source for the sending units?
Thanks,
Jon

Since your truck runs (and you have probably been living with this for a while) why not keep your eye on the "parting out" section of your newpaper? You might even try a junkyard.

I paid $75 for one through Michael's Toyota in Fresno a couple of years ago. Have them look up the part using the VIN to insure it's the right one.

Thanks for the replies. The sender is specific to the vin so unless I find a very close donor I will just do the math. Kragen wants $209 for the pump so I am finding the dealers quoted price of $97 hard to beleive. I will look for a trail spare pump at the junkyard. The nearest ones to me are just outside of Carson City, next door to all the cathouses!
Thanks again,
