Can anybody tell me how to hook up a Chevy alternator (I'll buy whatever alt part number I can get install details for) into my 85 4runner. I am sick of having to clean or rebuild my alternator after every trip out mudding. I am a welder/fabricator so the bracket is no problem but the wire codes are a different story.

If somebody could let me know wire to wire that would be very much appreciated.

check out www.cascadecrawlers.com/toyota/pages/gmalt.shtml
there is an article on just that- the big thing is to move the alternator where the p/s pump is and put the pump down low you just have to make brackets

The wiring is easy. All you need to do is run a wire from the alternator to your battery off the big post and then a wire that is switched 12v off the ignition to the brown wire. Here's a pic of mine:http://hatchery.gg.utk.edu/people/milan/Alt.jpg

Good luck, any questions ask away.

I have a 22re in my 85 4runner and if I do the install the way the cascadecrawlers.com says to, I would then wind up with my "check engine" light on constantly wouldn't I?

Also, does the charge light feed off the alt, or off the battery?

Monkey,

I've got some kind of braket set up that allows the chev alternator to be placed on the passenger side of the engine. It bolts onto the motor mount and then to an adjustable bracket. I haven't hooked it up yet but I'm thinking that it's the best way to carry a spare.

Come and check it out for sizing if you want. I'm in Calg. too.
