Is this a crazy idea?
I just spent $800 on swampers and would like to make em last so I figue I could use some street tires, but anything small would look dumb, so what about big rig or dump truck tires? I assume I would need special rims, or does someone make 8 lug 20 inch rims that are not all "bling bling" ?

has plenty of info about >16.5 inch rims.

I'll leave it up to you to decide if they
are bling bling.

the question is how big a street tire do you want?

You can get a Coyote tire in a 315/85R15 or 305/85R16 which are both a true 36" tire. Its supposed to wear real good like a Ground Hawg but if you look at the tread its like an All Terrain but a bit milder. I believe there is a few companies that can custom make a 19.5 inch rim I would think in a variety of lug patterns. Then you could use a highway michelin tire that would probably last 100,000 miles on a lighter vehicles considering it would be made for much heavier trucks. Hope this helps

If you want something around 38", I would look into the michelin radials 1100r16 @ 38" tall. I like mine try to find them from a military surplus dealer.

iI want tires that are around 36 to 37 inches. I like the idea of 100,000 mile street tires and my rig will easily be under 5000 lbs. My question is how hard are these tires? Would they ride extremeley rough? I assume that new they are way expensive, but what about re-treads? I am not so worried aobut rims, I guess I figure if I can't find anyone who builds them I could do it myself. Mostly I just wondered about anyone with experience running these tires. I have thought about the coyotes, but just thought I would explore other avenues for street tires.

somthing like these tires here

big rig tires are around, $450 ea. new. for name brands.
i see recaps for a little as $200 ea.
personally i dont like caps, there ok on drive axles, trucks running locally, especially const. trucks use them alot, and usually go through them every couple weeks. the biggest problem with them is they like to leak from a pinhole or separation and then blow off the tread.
in your case i would spend the money on new tires, they will probly last a few years on a non-commercail truck.
if you really want a nice commercial tire, you can get the "super singles" wich looks like the ones in tex's pics.
i dont think its a dumb idea at all, it will be spendy to set-up, but i think it will pay off in the long run.

oh i forgot, truck tires run 110 psi cold, so yes it will be a rough ride, but i dont see why you coudlnt run less air since your not carrying the weight.
