: "old" 5 speed to 3.4L engine q's
Lil'John 01-08-2002, 07:32 PM I'm thinking of doing a Marlin crawler on my Tacoma with the 3.4L engine and 5 speed manual.
I know marlin makes an adapter to go from the 5 speed manual to a gear reduction box and then another adapter to go from the gear reduction box to the stock Tacoma chain transfer case.
In hopes of making the swap cheaper(and hopefully easier), I am wondering if an older 5 speed trasmission that came with a gear'd transfer case could be bolted to the 3.4L engine.
Specifically, would it be as simple as using the "older" 5 speed bellhousing, transmission, etc?
Or is it a combination of the 3.4L bellhousing and the "older" 5 speed transmission?
SeaBass44 01-08-2002, 10:07 PM search, it's been talked about before. I can't remember every post or I could tell u:D

Lil'John 01-09-2002, 08:28 AM Seabass,
I did do a search.... I got over 600 hits:eek: I waded through about 300 of them.
Not one addressed taking an "old" five speed like the W56 or R151F in place of the R150F:(
One said something to the effect of the 3.0L bellhousing is the same as the 3.4L bellhousing. Too bad that they used the same tranny and not one that a gear transfercase uses:(
So, before I give Marlin a call, I'd like to do as much leg work as possible.
Anyone? Is it possible to to use either a W56 or R151F in place of the R150F behind a 3.4L Tacoma engine?
Bones 01-09-2002, 08:42 AM A firend of mine is running his stock V6 tacoma tranny with a marlin adapter to run a pre-taco tcase and has 4:1 gears in it. Of course this moves your diff to the other side, and might make for some "custom" exhaust work, but it's an option. But it's the same as adding the pre-taco tranny and tcase as well, so it might be a wash in cost.

they are Similar and probably could be adapted, but are not the same.
SeaBass44 01-09-2002, 11:25 AM I think someone said use the 3.0L bellhousing and the turbo tranny.
ErikB 01-09-2002, 11:31 AM Not sure if this will help, but my understanding is this:
There's no way to bolt a W56 to any Toy V6.
Supposedly Marlin said that the Taco R150F input and its bellhousing are a slightly different length than the older 3.0 R150F, so you have to keep the Taco tranny w/ its bellhousing.
An older 3.0 R150F (with its bellhousing) should bolt right up to a 3.4L.
A Turbo R151F could be bolted up to a 3.0 or 3.4 if you use a 3.0 bell housing.
A turbo tranny doesn't require an adapter to bolt up a gear-driven case (it already has one).
AFAIK, the adapter from the Taco R150 and 3.0 R150 to a gear driven reduction box is the same old "V6" adapter and the only "new" thing for the Tacoma is the adapter from the reduction box to the Taco's chain driven case.
Anyway, to answer your question:
"In hopes of making the swap cheaper(and hopefully easier), I am wondering if an older 5 speed trasmission that came with a gear'd transfer case could be bolted to the 3.4L engine."
The only transmission w/ a geared t-case that can be bolted to a 3.4 (or 3.0 for that matter) is the Turbo tranny w/ 3.0 bellhousing.
The only problem is that Turbo trannies are sometimes hard to find and usually not cheap, plus you'd have to find another bell housing, so you may be better off just buying the V6 adapter for your current tranny...

THANK YOU Eric. This is exactly the information I was looking for:smokin:
As I stated in my first message, my hopes is to keep the stock Tacoma driverside drop. So, if I kept my current tranny, I'd have way too much money in adapter:D
Fortunately, I have plenty of time to search for a turbo tranny and the appropriate bellhousing as this project is pretty far in the future.
SeaBass44 01-09-2002, 01:26 PM did u even read my post?
"I think someone said use the 3.0L bellhousing and the turbo tranny."
says the same thing, only shorter:flipoff2:

Actually I did.
But as the saying goes, "bigger is better":flipoff2: Plus, I now have more information I can claim to have forgotten :D
But, now I know that my only "choice" of trannies is the "rare" turbo tranny. Wonder if it is as rare as the 10 spline SM465 version of the NP203:D
It gives me the motivation that if I can find a turbo tranny for under the price of the marlin R150F adapter, I go that route and sell my R150F tranny :p
SeaBass44 01-09-2002, 02:33 PM marlin prob has a turbo trans to sell ya. there were 2 or 3 in the 4salke section here this year. also try carpart.com, carparts.com & car-part.com

Thanks for the input.
I'm not "real serious" about get the crawler in the Tacoma yet.... I'm still fawking around with the Cruiser:D
But, I always like to have a list of "oportunity" items to keep an eye out for especially when the price is low(thinks back to $50 10 spline Np203 I got;))
snowtoy 01-11-2002, 12:26 AM ok I just talked to Marlin about puting dual cases in my 89 4 runner with a V6 (3.0) and he told me that all I had to do is get a bellhousing from a turbo and bolt it up....
ErikB 01-12-2002, 10:00 PM Snowtoy- That doesn't make any sense AT ALL! :rasta:
Dual cases requre some type of "dual case adapter" no matter what.
A Turbo bellhousing will not bolt up to a V6, it will only bolt up to a 4cyl.
Here's what you would need for dual cases in your 3.0 V6:
A V6 tranny to gear driven transfer case adapter.
A gear driven t-case reduction box w/ 23 spline input (i.e. from turbo t-case).
A dual case adapter.
A complete gear driven t-case w/ 23 spline input (turbo t-case).
Summary- 2 adapters and one and half turbo t-cases.
OR...
A complete turbo tranny bolted to your current V6 tranny bell housing.
A dual case adapter.
A 23 spline reduction box.
Summary- 1 Turbo tranny/t-case, 1 adapter, 1/2 a turbo t-case.
