Does anyone know what the torque rating for a NP205 is? Looking to put one behind my powerstroke with a doubler and I wondering if it is up to the task?

"I was wondering if it would be possible to get max torque specifications
for the old NP205 transfer case. I know this case is old, and hasn't
been produced in at leasta decade, but no one else seems to have any
definitive answers regarding this case.

Thank you,

Aaron Peters

The 205 was originally rated at 1100 ftlb input torque for Dodge,
GM,Export and Military. The low ratio is 1.96 to 1, The high ratio is 1
to 1. Approximate weight is 156 lb. It was later rated 1500 ftlb in
1989.

Your gonna have a hrd time working that thing over with a PSD. I have run mine 300k miles behind the Bombed CTD pulling loads with 800-900 ft/lbs depending on the time of year and what mods i was running and have yet to shell it apart. knocked on the 1000 ft/lbs but i didnt have turbo enough to cool her EGT's on long grades. Pretty indestructible

Only problem i had was a front seal went out, dumped the oil and a bearing got loose and lodged between a couple of teeth. Locked the truck up at 75mph. Put it in reverse shook it loose, drove it 70 miles home with some new gear lube.

One of those FordCummins boys, eh. Great motor, great truck. Don't count the PSD out yet.

I don't doubt the strength of the 205. Just want to be sure it can handle a diesel with a reduction box in front of it.

How much torque is your Power stroke putting out? stock?
Auto trans or manual? 203 box in front of the 205?

It'll probably be just fine unless youre running a real turned up motor.

460lbs at the rear wheels stock. Auto with either a Klune or 203 in front. Stock NV271 is super long. Doubler kit or klune with 205 takes up about the same amount of space. Wouldn't even have to touch the drivelines. Still looking for some real numbers.

There have only been 2 times that I have seen a 205 break. Once was when a customer ran it out of oil and the other was when I saw a full size that had been rolled off a cliff.

any of them I have seen dusted up were from the bearing retainers giving out,, there a chitty cast aluminum. thats why I made up some of these...they fit just like the stock ones but there machined from billet 6061-T6 and use socket head cap screws. If you want more info on them look in the vender area under bearing retainers.

:nuke: Yep IM one of those Guys, PSD Injectors cost too much and too often :barf: and then i lost a head to a minor crack. :rasta: Bailed on the Binder Motor got an el Cheapo SCUMMINS and stuffed her under the hood of this truck. Havent had to spin a wrench in 300k miles aside from filters. :D I think im getting spoiled ;)

203 Reduction box matched to the cummins no problem, you arent planning on hauling 30k lbs regularly are you. Even then i wouldnt worry too much its straight through when you arent using the gear reduction so it shouldnt roach.

Actually wish i had the added option of a gear reduction Low isnt low enough most of the time.
