: 22R to 22RE

I'm asking this for my lazy-ass brother who can't get off his ass and ask himself:

Does he need the head -> up or just the intake -> out to convert his 22R to a 22RE? The reason I ask is because I can get him a complete setup for free, but only from the intake -> out. Also, how much would a setup like the one I can get for free cost him if I wasn't his brother? :D

PS: I seem to recal this having been gone over before, but search didn't turn anything up. :flipoff2:

Yeah, what year??

If the head has 20 threaded holes on the intake side it will take the EFI.

His motor is a mix of parts from 1982 - 1984. The head currently has more holes in ti than his intake uses, though. Does that mean it has the 20 that he would want to put EFI on?

when I tryed to do this I had everything setup to swap, and when I went to bolt the intake up one of the holes was off. The heads with both sets of holes are kind of rare, although I did find one to swap on. Beware, you cannot put an 85+ head on an 84 block, the pistons will hit the valves.

Some other questions:

Is the system a closed loop or is it adjusted manually?

Will it give an increase in hp and torque and gas mileage? If so, how dramatic?

I assume the pump is a high pressure pump for the fuel, but does it go in the fuel tank, or can it be inline? (I assume that inline is fine.)

Do we have to do something special with his existing fuel lines? Or can we keep the new rubber hoses we just installed?

Thanks for any answers.

Oh, and what about distributor? Does he need a different one to hook up to the computer?

It's a closed loop. Yes, it will give you a small increase in hp, and you will of course get better gas milage, especially if you get the injectors cleaned and balanced before you put the EFI on there.

You have to put EFI fuel lines on there. The carb lines aren't designed to be pressurized that much. I would go ahead and get an EFI gas tank, with the internal fuel pump, the bottom is baffeled so as not to wreck your fuel pump if you run out of gas. If your going to do this, your going to need almost everything from the other truck. Your going to need to put a complete EFI wiring harness in there. You need the distributor, coil and ignitor, the relays, computer, the guage cluster (if you are going to pass CA smog, you need the check engine light), the alternator is different, etc etc. I'll say it again, you pretty much need everything from a donor truck :D

He just bought a fuel cell, so if it's possible to run an inline high pressure fuel pump, he's going to. Otherwise, we can probably get everything from the donor except the head, alternator, and distributor. Is it worthwhile otherwise, see as how we can get everything else for free?

If it you feel like you want fuel injection, and you have time to do it, I say go for it, but know that this isn't a five minute job, and it will take some time...just my $.02
