Not to hard core, but bear with me.
I have a sort of ticking noice from my 4.6. It is more audible under the truck than under the hood. If i put my fingertips to the rocker covers I feel almost nothing, but the ticking/vibration is there when i touch the alternator and the belt tensioner.
My suspicions have gone from valves or exhaust manifolds to bearings in ancilliaries.
Is it OK to remove the serpentine and start the engine to verify this?
Am I on the right track, or should I be looking elsewhere?
The truck runs fine otherwise, and there is no increase in ticking or other suspicious sounds with increased load or rpm's.

Sacrifice a chic pen in the driveway.
Yes you can remove the serpentine belt for a short time to verify the noise or lack of. Do you think it is the idler pulley? Check the other anchilliries with the belt off by spinning them. I have not heard from your little sister yet, by the way.

I'll do the woodoo and try the belt then. It feels like something is tugging on the belt. The idler pulley tensioner arm moves about more than the engine, and it is not from misfires. Idler pulley, alternator, or maybe servo pump, since the noice seems to be stronger under the engine.
Think I need to remind my sister. As a piece of confidential advice, you may want to bring out the softer part of Pendy. Macho boys rarely score big with Swedish girls. Loads of money works, though.

Idler pulley it is. No loss of chicken.
Also found a trickle at the water pump, which may explain loss of coolant. If I can make it purr like the luxury motor it was advertized to be and get it off the coolant habit I may treat it to a Tornado Chip.
No news on my sister, though. It's entirely up to Pendy's charm now...

I am only macho online. I am sweet as sugar around the ladies. In real life I stand only 4' tall, like an angry dwarf or yard gnome. I have extra girth to make up for my lack of height though. Hope my shortness is not a turn off to your sweet swedish sis. Maybe she needs a mascot to follow her about.
As far as loads of money I would have to dig up all the coffee cans up out back to see how many loads I have.
Can you just replace the bearing on that idler?
