My concern is that of the suspension systems. There is a huge gap between stock suspension systems with up to 35s and custom suspension systems with up to 40s. I have a solid axle tacoma on 35s and I have zero competition experience. So I surely don't fit into the pro modified class or anything to do with Pros. But due to the rules on suspension, I can't fit into the modified stock class. Now I'm not seriously considering competing at this point just because, well, just because I'm not. But if I was I'd like to be competing with trucks and especially drivers on my level. So I'm wondering if these same rules are keeping others in my same situation out of the competition scene? Just a thought. Big Rich 01-10-2002, 08:30 AM They might be, but were do we draw the line? There will always be vehicles that fall in between classes. I hate it as much as the owners of those vehicles. But how do we draw up classes that are competitive, like grouping, and with out running 10 different classes. Desert racing has many more classes but they all run on the same course, we can't, the days are not long enough. What I see happening at this time is guys getting together and putting one rig together for the modiifed stock class, Team work... Manufactures are or will a big part of this class someday, and to be honest that support is badly needed for the sport to survive. Inless the drivers/teams want to pay the full cost of the show, as some of the promotors are having them do. If anyone has ideas on how to do this differently please let me know. Usually, it's someone who has a vehicle that 99% fits a particular class, but because they don't have front brakes, or mufflers, or ONE SPECIFIC COMPONENT, they get bumped up to a whole 'nuther category. And there's just nothing that can be done about that. You draw the rules up with the following in mind: 1) are they fair overall? 2) are there enough differences in each class to justify HAVING different classes? 3) Will the splits provide the best spectator entertainment (don't want to draw the lines so that you have 2 guys in one class, 47 guys in the next one, & 9 guys in the 3rd one). That 3rd point is often overlooked by lots of folks. For example, I have a class that cuts tire size off at 38.0" stamped. EVERYONE wonders why I don't just round it up to 38.5". Simple, it would DOUBLE the size of the class since that is such a popular size of tire (that, plus some 38.5's are as much as two full inches taller than 38.0's). So, that's why I go from 35.0 to 38.0 to 44 as I progress in the tire size. Seems unbalanced to the casual observer, but with the other rules that are applied, & the way the classes split in terms of #'s, it really isn't. That all being said, I do have one concern about the 35" class. In that class, I don't think you should allow any modifications to the tire tread. Is that the actual dates or is it the 8th through the 10th? Being bumped up a class isn't always that bad. Sometimes you can do well. A friend of mine was bumped up from the stock class at a mud racing event because he had 39" tires. He ended up winning his class with an otherwise bone stock '74 F250 tall boy. :cool2: 1uglyranger 01-10-2002, 07:38 PM Falling between the rules is a way of life.... If you built your rig before the rules were posted, then chances are, you don't fit, or you are lucky. Anyone that has done a SAS, or any major change in their suspension geometry, is no longer "stock". We all knew that before we hacked off our IFS in favor of something different. If you really wanna compete, then build a truck for the rules, don't try to fit the rules to your truck......it doesn't work.
