Hi,

http://www.offivaruste.com did all the hard work, and here is the result:

http://stiletti.wipsl.com/albums/album76/Copy_of_range_029.sized.jpg

http://stiletti.wipsl.com/albums/album80/DSC04644.sized.jpg

About 41 cm (16") under the differential with Q78-16 swampers (O.D. 35.5").

More pictures in here (http://stiletti.wipsl.com/gallery/album76).

The car is 100% street legal in Finland (with 31" rubbers... :-)

The basic car is 1988 3.5 efi automatic, and I have not changed transfer gearbox gearing yet, I have ~2500 rpm @ 80 km/h (50 mph), and volvo manual says this is the max. cruise speed, or the portals might get too hot. I have 1:1.003 transfer gearbox waiting to replace current 1:1.222 one, but I don't think the swap is needed.

Original volvo drum brakes work but are not as good as RR disc brakes, I hope to have disc brakes in this some day.

That's pretty sweet! Now you just need to do some cutting on those fenderwells before the tires do it for you:D

Sweet!

Fender cutting is probably not needed, other than maybe at the lips, since the hubs will be 5" lower than normal when the axle hits the bumpstops.

How dit you get it street legal? I have it from friends in Åland (Swedish speaking Finnish archipelago between Swedish and Finnish mainland for the geographically challenged) that you are not allowed to weld on the axles in Finland. Allegedly, you need to register in Sweden first as modified vehicle with the support of SFRO before you bring it back to Finland. Is this what you did, or is there another way?

I have a set of Volvo's waiting for a project, and I'm looking for the biggest loophole to get the end result registered.

Hi,

http://stiletti.wipsl.com/albums/album82/DSC04758.sized.jpg

Fender cutting is probably not needed, other than maybe at the lips, since the hubs will be 5" lower than normal when the axle hits the bumpstops.Fender cutting could/should be done in the rear, I took some pics today (http://stiletti.wipsl.com/gallery/album82), see e.g. this (http://stiletti.wipsl.com/albums/album82/DSC04748.sized.jpg) and this (http://stiletti.wipsl.com/albums/album82/DSC04752.sized.jpg) (but don't loot at this piece of junk (http://stiletti.wipsl.com/albums/album82/DSC04727.sized.jpg))...

The rear is very light right now, no hi-lift, no tools, no spare tyre, no rear seats, (no spare RR diffs and drive shafts :-), nothing, so I expect the axle to "hit" the bump stops OK, and the other side is limited by the original shocks...

Front does not work very well (yet), the bushes are too good... :-)

How dit you get it street legal? The inspection was taken care of by offivaruste, they took it to an inspection station and it took one and half hour for the *whole* personnel (~6 engineers) to agree "we cannot find anything that makes this illegal"... :-) Everything is in the legal limits in Finland, no trics whatsoever were used.

I have a set of Volvo's waiting for a projectV8, auto gearbox, very good suspension, nice chassis, ~OK body, reasonably light-weight but weak axles, that's a RR, just waiting for your axles!!!

Wilsby, you have seen this http://english.hotchallenge.se/index.html ?

WOW!

I would like to see pics of how the brackets for the suspension were made.

Those portals are pretty sick. I know a guy here in the states that's going to be manufacturing a full line of support products for them very soon.

It is a tempting option!!!

Very nice, and welcome newby!

:flipoff2:

Edit: Never mind, I went to your site and saw the pics I wanted. :D

Hi,

> how the brackets for the suspension were made

At least some of the brackets were cut off from old RR axletubes.

> full line of support products

Is it http://www.xtremeaxle.com ? Disc brakes would be very nice, but I want to use the original volvo 16" rims.

Paavo,
yes the Hotchallenge guys are my buddies. That will be a good truck when done.

Putting the axles under a Classic is an option, as is building a custom trialler, or maybe putting them under a Landrover Lightweight for a robust offroader? They would also be nice under my Defender 110, but disc brakes is an issue. Too many projects right now, so I'll let the axles sit for a while.

Hi,

Quoted text by wilsby originally in this thread (http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?threadid=22051&pagenumber=7).

> Any thoughts on tippiness on sideslopes? Do you feel the
> track width to be sufficient, or will you space out the wheels?

I think (not 100% sure, if these are not right please post correct numbers) RRC track width is 58.5" (with stock rims/tyres) and Volvo C303 is 61", so mine is 2.5" wider than the (stock) RRC. Thats not much when it's about 9" higher (tyres 29" -> 36", 4-5" portal lift and 1" springs). The axles and tyres are heavier than the originals, but the COG is several incles higher now.

No plans to use spacers (illegal in Finland on-road use) or get wider rims/tyres, the swampers on the original volvo rims work very well (especially because my previous ones were 31*10.5r15 BFG all-terrains :emb3: ). One reason is that if I wanted make this wider, I would need to do some cutting (here the axle is half an inch away from the stock bump stop):

http://stiletti.wipsl.com/albums/album82/DSC04752.sized.jpg

And cutting the door might not be that simple. But lets agree that I reserve the right to change my opinion about wider tyres, things may change when these 11" swampers are not enough any more... :D

I' not a big fan of sideslopes, the body is still very much stock (but 16 years old, and Finnich climate is quite good for corrosion), i.e. no rollcage, and many times my boy (6y) is in the passengers seat, so I don't want to take big risks. And remember, this is a daily driver, so if I roll it our family would have some transportation logistics challenges... :)

How did you handle the steering/panhard rod?

We have collision between tie rod and panhard rod mount when there still is 80mm left of uptravel.

We removed panhard rod support and now only lack 30mm. Panhard rod will be relocated. It looks in your picture that you have everything still in position.

Hi,

How did you handle the steering/panhard rod?

Panhard rod is re-located, it's roughly in the same position (i.e. mounted on the driver side to the chassis, passenger side to the axle), but it has been turned, i.e. the end that was connected to the axle is now connected to the chassis. Fits in there, just and just.

Front axle uptravel has been limited by ~2". My digicamera battery is empty just now, pls. pm (or e-mail) me if you want pictures.

I especially like the 180 degree power slide skid marks while parking :)

Nicely done conversion too!
