Will 4.56 gears do fine with 33'?

What do you mean - will they match your paint?

I run 5.38's with 33's and no overdrive gear - and they work fine (assuming a top speed of 60 mph is fine).

Fine for rocks, maybe. Not for mud, MUDGOD.

This should help you with your decision.

As others have posted it is all about what you need the vehicle to do.
I run 4:88 gears with auto and O/D thats about 70 MPH cruise speed:jeep:

What does paint has to do with anything.
I was wondering performancewise. At this time I'm running 3.07's with my TSL's and they suck ass. But than again my TSL's measure about 34" (the size of most 35's out there).
Thanks for the input guys.

What I meant, is that you didn't state what you were trying to accomplish. Muddrunning needs higher gears, as does highway use. Lower gears are better on the rocks, etc.

I have 33's on my YJ what gears will make it good for daily driving as well as occasionaly going wheeling?

Cool.
I do mostly trails with steep muddy hills, lots of short and deep mudholes, not too many rocks. Mostly up/down/sideways in the woods. It is also my DD so I need some sort of street performance. (not really important)

What engine do you have?
What transmission?

Assuming you have a manual here are some guesses:
4-banger: 4.56-4.88
4.0: 4.10-4.27
258: 3.73-4.27

You can get away with a higher (lower numerical) ratio with an OD automatic... These are just rule-of thumb ranges assuming you don't wanna do the rock crawling thing...

However, if you're like most jeepers I know, you should save yourself a little money and replace your axles and do the gears at the same time and go a little higher than you think you'll need with your current tires because, if you're honest with yourself, you KNOW you're going to want bigger tires... Admit it! :D

Again--What engine do you have?

4-banger: 4.10
4.0 or 258: 3.07

my current setup is a 95 YJ with the 4.0 litre and a RE 4.5 lift and 33's. It is my DD and I am loking for somehting to give power back to the engine and do well offroad and onroad. The bigger tires feel like they are sapping power from the engine.

just put the 4.56 in. when i ran the stock axles( long long ago) i ran the 4.56 gears with 33s and had the 4.0 ax15. it was an awsome setup for the street mud and rocks. then i swapped to 1/2 tons and 5.13s with 35 and stock motor/tranny and that worked great everywere also. now i run 37s with 5.13s in 1 ton axles with a 350/th350. you can never go to low, cause you will always want a bigger tire later on.

what would give me better gas mileage. the 4.11 or the 4.56? and then which would be better all around? The 4.56 is sounding good.

the 4.56 would the 33 bog the engine down to much with 4.11s
