: Am I crazy...

to think about running 38x12.5 TSL SXs on a Dana 30?

Now before you all yell YES, consider this:

I've run JV a couple times with 260 ujoints and the current Big-O 35s (34.5" actual) (and a few times before that with 33s) and never broke a joint. I eventually broke one backing out of a gully (stupid). I guess I have a rather conservative driving style. I have since gone to 297s without the disconnect.

It's a four-banger with 90:1(SM420) and a tri-county flywheel weight. With the 35s I don't feel torque limited, more traction limited.
38s are apparently actually 36.5", so that's not tooooo huge a change, and they're going on Rockstomper beadlocks, so I can run 3psi to reduce the effective moment arm.

I carry spare driveshafts, yokes, axleshafts, steering knuckles, ball joints, tie rod, and front ring and pinion and carrier. Got a spare D30 housing in the garage I could lash to the back...:) I carry full ft axle assys with the unit bearing so they take about 15min to change (and only cost $100 for inner/outer/ujoint).

I was all set to get 36 SXs, but I've bought 4 sets of tires in the last few years, and always gone too small. I just wanna break out of that cycle:rolleyes:

Still think I'm crazy?

do it, then later you can get a better front. i run 38s on a fj62 land cruiser and have not broken a birfield joint yet. i know i'm lucky but it has a auto and a doggy 3f 6 banger. so far its been great. i just got a set of 38.5x14.5 to go on it.

Go for it.... Hell, you have all the parts to rebuilt it if necessary.... Don't know if I'd drag the spare housing along :D LOL

I don't see a problem if you are a good driver with a light foot. Having the 4cly is probally to your advantage. I have a friend with a 97 TJ with a four banger a NP231 with a Tera Low and a Klune V and is running 38 SX's with beadlocks. This guy has ran some of the hardest trails out there and has never broken a u-joint. Just carry the spare parts just in case.

I run 38 SXs on a Dana 30, haven't broken YET. I'm sure eventually it's going to happen, but until then....

If you got the parts why not......you seem to be lucky so far. You seem to have "mastered" the "skinny pedal"......LOL:beer: ;) :D

I run a 4.0/999/300 in my YJ with full width 44/9" axles and 38.5" SX's. I run all over the con, through the sluice, back and forth. My 297 joints never wimpered. I did break a cap in the snow though. I have all stock dana shafts too.

I think your setup will be fine. Carry SOME spare parts and be done with it. Leave the housing at home.

You are aware of how aneimic the 2.5 is, right??? Couldn't pull a sick whore off the piss-pot if it had a running start...

WHAAAAT? NOOOOOO!
I thought it only pulls 45mph up the 14 cuz of the headwind.:D

(I'm keeping the 35s for occasional trips to work and long tows).

Never wanted more off road tho.
Let me tell a little story about a sand hill on a night run where for a while only 2 people could make it, a guy named Coy (Top Banana with a built AMC BB) and little ole me (6 psi, lotsa revs, and two perfect powershifts). That's with 33s, of course.:p

That flywheel thingie helps a lot, BTW. And if the axle doesn't explode, I can spend the dough on a Klune.

I might just go for the 38s, since now I can blame POR.
