: Front Hub overhaul

The RH front hub on my 87 110 has developed a small amount of play and before I went into it I took a look at the manuals to see what I would need.

The manual says that a dial gauge is required to set the end float. Well I don't own a dial gauge and have never used one on any of my previous non LR trucks, I've always used a spring scale and set the hub by the amount of force required to spin it.

So my questions are, do I need to use the dial gauge or is there another way to do it? And is there anything else I should be aware of or will need to replace?

As you can guess I haven't had to pull Defender hubs apart before so any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

you will need the 2-1/16" hub nut socket. they can be had for about $20 from british pacific.

i wouldn't worry about the dial - just torque it down roughly to spec by hand and you should be fine. the field-based LR tool doesn't even have a provision for a torque wrench - just a round t-handle through the socket.

get some new bearings, some moly lube, and the little gasket parts and you should be set. wouldn't be a bad time to pull your CV joints and give them a good visual inspection.

cheers,

Thanks, I'll start looking for those parts.
