: Did ECR go soft?
RVR OVR 01-09-2002, 12:19 PM I thought ECR was definately planning on 35's for the Discotech. Now, I read this on the site:
"Will we go this big? most likely not (we've already got 35s on ECR4)... only time will tell, but they do fit and they look good to us. The downside is that with larger tires comes more stress on axles and such. To combat this, no matter what size tire "
Bummer. What are the big 'ole flairs for then? Maybe the Discoweb thread got to them...
Tom
RockRover 01-09-2002, 01:05 PM Hmmmmm. Too bad. But in all honesty, runing a rig that heavy...I mean what? With all the gear, and add-on's that thing must be close to 6K...Heck my rover weighed in at 4200! Sure it was loaded, but still...Alum body, tcase housing, block and heads? Still baffels me.
Anyway, they're doing the right thing IMO. It's a flag-ship rig, that just can't afford to be blowing CV's every turn. Now for the "avg" consumer, I would agree with runnign 36's...Naw! 38.5's! That way when you do break for the N'th time, you can finally justify ripping out the Rover crap :flipoff2: and slap in some Dana's, Portals, whatever.

I sure hope they didn't let all that crap on the Discoweb get to them, I was really looking forward to seeing what all they were gonna do. It sure isn't stopping me, it's just more encouragement.

RVR OVR 01-09-2002, 01:33 PM I agree. I think the flairs are a pretty strong breakthrough. Not the concept of "flairs", but simply somebody has finally done something about the rear door problem. Will definately make it easier to fit 33's w/out messing with putting the axle farther back to clear the door.
With my CV shaft, I had to remove all the spacers out of my RT links to get the correct pinion angle. Bad thing is that it is very close to the door. 33's may not fit w/out getting something like the RT A-arm extension and dealing with messing with the spacers all over again to eliminate the vibes....
Tom
madcowdungbeetle 01-09-2002, 01:54 PM I don't really like the ECR flares, though if I saw them in person I might change my mind. There's a rainforest Disco with 36" Swampers that has some really nice, clean flares, kinda remind me of the ones on the Disco II's. I'd like to find out where they came from. I do agree though, that it is nice to finally have an option to deal with the issues that arrise with larger tires and the rear door.

RVR OVR 01-09-2002, 02:44 PM Rainforest Disco?
Got pics? I remember a site from Australia w/a Disco w/35's. Anyone got the link?
Tom
madcowdungbeetle 01-09-2002, 02:57 PM I'll post a link to it when I get home, unless someone does beforehand.
Here's the Aussie Disco www.trailcraft.net.au

GRNRVR 01-09-2002, 04:04 PM Tom, I took all the spacers off my RT links as well and I still need the A arm extension.. I figure I will put the big spacer or big and little spacer back in and then use the A arm to correct the pinion. That way when I go to bigger tires I can just trim a little more off the rear and not the doors. However, I'm taking my truck to John for this so that I get the A arm right.
madcowdungbeetle 01-09-2002, 05:08 PM Here's the Rainforest Disco I was talking about:

I think Brian had posted the pic on the Discoweb, but I dunno what's up with that site lately.

I don't think the Discoweb got to them. This is a project truck which they intend to sell after it's completed. If the new owner wants 35's, at least he knows they will fit if he wants them.
Up until now, who ever thought that you could fit 35's on a Disco with only a 2" lift. Granted, they did do a lot of cutting, but they also eliminated the 3+" lift with all the vibration problems that are inherent with lifts of this height.
Don't get "bummed out" just yet, they're not done with this project and I don't think they really know just how far they can push the envelope with the Disco's. We'll just have to wait and see.
So far it looks like they have some good ideas, and I'm waiting to see the finished product, just as we all are.
Marty
the rainforest disco looks nice.
Old Scout 01-09-2002, 07:16 PM LOOKS great! I'll be there after I retire the disco from DD status. ;) ;)
evilfij 01-09-2002, 09:12 PM That ECR statement sounds like Kyle. LOL
I would be all over it (flairs) if it did not mean hacking the crap out of the door. Thats just asking for a flood of water everytime you go though something.
Anyone figure out how far back you can move the rear axle before you hit the fuel tank with the dif? Or I guess we could do some clearancing like Marty did to the bottom of his tank :)
Ron
madcowdungbeetle 01-09-2002, 09:32 PM I'd like to know where those fender flares came from. Their sites are www.passionoffroad.com & www.rainforestspain.com, unfortunatly I don't know Spanish. Also, anyone else notice the bolt pattern on that Disco?

evilfij 01-09-2002, 09:46 PM Brian,
You already run 35s LOL
ECR makes the disco flares $325 but they are fiberglass which to be says they will crack and what not when you hit stuff. maybe they could be made out of deformable plastic like D90 flares.
Also a bunch of companies in Australia make similar ones out of ???? I dunno.
5x6.5in You should see the size of the lugnuts too. Only thing that sucks is finding wheels!
Ron
evilfij 01-09-2002, 09:48 PM Bolt pattern. Good catch! Not stock. Wonder what the axles came off of? Toy?
Rover Addiction 01-10-2002, 09:27 AM I'm looking at those and thinking yota axles. However, If they wanted to stay rover, they could possibly be 101 axles with custom rims. I think the pattern is a little small for that though..
So.. my vote is dana stu ff.. 44s probably.

RVR OVR 01-10-2002, 10:32 AM Agreed on the flairs. I don't really like the shape of the ECR holes, or that I would have to paint them. They come shiny black ,which is fine, but dull pliable plastic black ones would be much nicer.

I ordered a set and have to pick them up in a few weeks, but I'm installing them on my truck!! Don't know if I'll go all out with the 35's or just be satisfied with 34's.
Also bought a 3-link, but PLEASE don't tell Kyle or anyone else on the Discoweb.............
;)

evilfij 01-10-2002, 09:47 PM Cool Marty!
Let me know if you want to unload those 265 80 TSl radials.

RVR OVR 01-11-2002, 12:14 PM Marty,
You got 34's now or you are planning on them with the flairs?

Right now I don't have any plans on selling them. I do on occasion, do snow runs, and I'm afraid with the 34's I'll be tearing up a lot of hardware with the chains, so right now the 34's will be a second set. If I do deciede to sell them, I'll let you know.
Are these for Dom or yourself, just curious??

Right now I have 265\80-16's on. When I get the flares installed I intend to go with 34's. I would like to try 35's but I don't want the hassle of going to monster lifts to do it. I'll have to wait and see how ECR does with the 35's on their project truck, I like to idea of that option with only a 2" lift.
Marty
evilfij 01-11-2002, 07:29 PM They would be for me. My POS rangie is on 245s ATs and would look better on the 265 80s. Not that it gets wheeled much with the disco and the series around. Dom is pretty happy with his 235 85 futuras which are basically new.
Definatley a good thought though about chains and snow tires. Guess it depends on what you decide on to run with the flares, if you go close to max the chains will definately chew up the fenders and such.
Let us know what you think of the flares when you get them.
Ron
madcowdungbeetle 01-13-2002, 06:22 PM Anyone seen the latest update to the ECR site? Looks like they aren't goin' soft after all.

RVR OVR 01-13-2002, 09:23 PM Great! It almost seems they are explaining away the naysayers in advance. I can't wait to see this thing finished...

Jtisdale 01-14-2002, 07:22 AM The claim about using 1 Ton CVs to create a bulletproof drivetrain running 35's is a bit suspect.
JT
Jtisdale 01-14-2002, 12:08 PM Is anyone running these birf adapters from Mac? I'd be interested if someone with 35's or so was having good sucess.
BTW you guys see the post on the 90 List of the kid running 37 SSRs on his 93 110, looked niiiiiiccccccce! www.delrc.com under Haloween photos.
JT
evilfij 01-14-2002, 05:01 PM I will make sure to tell Jesse you called him a "kid."
hehehe
The 110 is super nice in a something that has been wheeled for 5 years but still cared for sort of way. I got to see it when I was in maine for H.E.
