: McNamara Lockers???
Scout Dude 01-09-2002, 12:15 PM I was reading the Tough Truck challenge write up and noticed that the Burb used McNamara lockers. Having never heard of them, I searched and came up with there site: McNamara Lockers (http://www.mcnamaradiffs.com.au/products.html) . Anyone know anything about these? Any good or bad things about them? It look like they are actuated by either vacume or air. Anyone know what the cost is for one of these? (I don't feel like calling, cuz I'm not buying crap right now;))
Hillbilly 01-09-2002, 12:24 PM The owner of the Burb is on here, I d0n't rember his name though. Maybe he will enlighten us. I am curious aswell.
I talked to the owner of McNamara last year about a vacuum actuated locker.
Uses manifold vacuum to keep it locked with an inlne airfilter. Sounded like a good setup, no chance of pumping dirty air into the seals like an air locker.
But then I got the price, almost 1200 bucks to my door(Austraila to Hawaii) after shipping and customs charges for one D60 locker.
evilfij 01-09-2002, 08:24 PM Some rover people run them. Also they make them for toys. The reason they make a D60 is that the rover salisbury is the same carrier.
Good rep (not heard of failure but I could count the ones I know of on one hand) but pricey. Also people seem to think the maxidrive is better (why I dunno, maybe because it comes in a package with shafts?)
I am actually considering their 35 spline conversion for my salisbury but since it uses EN25 (maybe EN26) I am looking into custom.

YEA but the aussy dollar fell on it's face is only worth 0.52 us dollar now! Check with Steve N he might be bringing in a few for ~700 plus shipping.

Huh:confused: Are you speaking Yuppie Rover talk?:flipoff2:
evilfij 01-09-2002, 11:32 PM Thats what I get for only owning british crap.
I will break it down in rover redneck:
"Also people seem to think the maxidrive is better (why I dunno, maybe because it comes in a package with shafts?) "
redneck: Some of dem yuppies like that maxidrive (another Australian company) locker better than that Mac Locker. Bet its because ther locker comes with dem hy-tuff (high spec alloy steel) axle shafts everyone uses.
"I am actually considering their 35 spline conversion for my salisbury but since it uses EN25 (maybe EN26) I am looking into custom."
redneck: I was thinkin about gittin me a Mac 35 spline conversion for my rover D60 (salisbury), but since it uses EN25 steel (about 4130) rather than that thar hy-tuff all my yuppie friends like. So it looks like I am gunna give Strange or Moser a call fer some custom shafts fer it.
My applogies to true rednecks everywhere. I am just a wannabe :(
Ron
fcfred 01-09-2002, 11:46 PM so you're talking about the shafts and not the locker itself?
don't salsbury 60's run 35 spline shafts?
also what other types of actuators do they have?
electric, mechanical (cable)
what is the prefered method?
and how do they compare to an ox locker
anyone know the status of the dana 60 ox locker?

I am talking about Mac lockers. I know of only one person using the Mac shafts are maxidrive shafts are stronger, but maxi does not yet make a 35 spline conversion for the salisbury, so thats that. Salisburys are 24 spline stock. I know you can get air Mac Lockers maybe cable to you would have to check. Preferred I would say vacuum but I have limited experience. I know little about the OX, but you can make whatever D60 locker you want work in a salisbury if you change the shafts (to either 30 or 35).

Whoa easy tiger I'm not quoting any pricing. I may be interested in getting some. If a few folks want to work with me, and agree to buy some I may be able to make a the buyers good deal. I don't even have an idea on my costs yet. Plus I haven't contacted anyone at McNamarra yet.

I don't have a firm price yet so at least for now I'm not quoting. I need to see also what I can sell them for per McNamarra's rules too. If the devaluation thing is correct, it may be a real good deal though.
fcfred,
MacNamara told me (last year) they were working on a cable actuated locker for the 60, but like I said, the price scared me off so i never followed up on it.
fcfred 01-10-2002, 06:39 PM well I have a friend heading down there next week and I wondered what they go for down there.
anyone know?
evilfij 01-10-2002, 09:01 PM some of the prices are on the website I found.
I also emailed them and got prices asap, BUT I am warning you now they have a bad rep for getting stuff done, we are talking 1 year waits. however, they have since moved into a new shop and things are supposed to be better.
FWIW
Ron
fcfred 01-11-2002, 04:12 PM so are these things totally custom or do they make like 10,000 and have them on the shelf in almost every 4x4 shop in australia like detroits are here?
can my friend just walk into "gidday mate's 4x4 shop" in downtown canberra and ask for a 35 spline salsbury mcnamara locker? or are they special order things?
evilfij 01-11-2002, 06:36 PM Fred,
I dunno. I got the impression that they were made to order, but I dunno whether or not you could email them and say I need 35spline salsibury in 2 weeks to be picked up or not. I have only talked with macnamera directly, so I dunno if anyone in Au carries them.

bigblaze 01-15-2002, 09:42 PM what kind of enlighten would you like. I paid just over a grand for mine buy the time i payed customs and all that crap. But i think it was worth it! I think it is a very strong unit and i like the vacuum actuator although i plan on converting to the cable actuator as soon as i can get it. My motor does not have a whole lot of it and i have to rev it up a couple of times every once in awhile to engage it even with my vacuum resevoir. I would rather reach down and pull the cable. But i am extremly happy with it! After you get passed the sting$
Scout Dude 01-16-2002, 06:19 AM Why did you choose the Mc locker over the Ox if the ox is cable operated and cheaper (it is cheaper isn't it?)
fcfred 01-16-2002, 10:12 AM probably because the ox wasn't out yet for the 60 when he was heading for top truck.
Scout Dude 01-16-2002, 11:47 AM That would make sense...
fcfred 01-16-2002, 12:35 PM but i too would like to see a comparison of the 2
bigblaze 01-16-2002, 02:08 PM that would be correct fred!
