: Gearing Opinion Pole
zukin 04-07-2004, 12:28 PM Based on the followng info which TC gears is the way to go?
AXLE RATIO 4.88 to-1
TRANSFER CASE RATIO 6.4 to-1
TRANSMISSION LOW GEAR RATIO 3.692 to-1
OVERALL RATIO 116.05 to-1
AXLE RATIO 4.88 to-1
TRANSFER CASE RATIO 8 to-1
TRANSMISSION LOW GEAR RATIO 3.692 to-1
OVERALL RATIO 142.57 to-1
6.4:1 = $649
8:1 = $985
AnotherCanuck 04-07-2004, 12:58 PM Even I know this is stupid question. How much do YOU want to spend? What do YOU want your final ratio to be? How slow do YOU want to go? Give me a couple of items off the menu and I'll tell you what to have for dinner, and make sure you leave a nice tip.
RocKrawler 04-07-2004, 02:06 PM Currently making the same decision... you cant have 2lo with the 8-1 gears per Glenn at RR ... soooooo... going 6.4 with 5.29 gears, and will upgrade to the rock box later to make it lower still when next years tax return comes in. That way I'll have a lower final drive (225 to 1) , 2 lo, lower INITIAL cash outlay & be on the trail sooner. The 8-1 sounds nice, but I remember on previous Zuks how much I liked and used 2Lo. With the Trail Tough sale going right now, its hard to lose... and the service and atitude is Waaaaay better judging by my personal experiences on the phone with both companies over the last 2 days.
A note on the service: I went into it aware but unbiased of the reputations of each company... I have to say corresponding with Glenn at RR was a pleasure, but the "phone clerk" that took my call couldnt have cared less about what I wanted to accomplish. After my call to Trail Tough I was pretty much sold on the price, parts, explanations I was given and courtesy and interest shown in what I wanted to do.

I didn't know that about 2 lo with the 8:1.
That is very valuable info. Thank you.
And my experience with TT has aleways been great also.
I guess its is leaning toward the 6:1 hope he doesn't run out!

I know how much I want too spend!
I know what I want my ratio to be!
I know how slow I want to go!
And I seldom leave a nice tip!
That is NOT what the poll is about.
But thanks for responding anyway you Fawking newbie:flipoff2:
HZJ60_Guy 04-07-2004, 10:19 PM Get the 6.4 AND a TT rock box or ST rock block!
The more ratios the better!

That was my thinking....
tipover 04-07-2004, 10:58 PM I got 2 low with my 8:1s Maybe glenn cant do the s pattern, but I did the H in mine!
RocKrawler 04-07-2004, 11:34 PM he said the t-case wouldnt hold up to it..
tipover 04-07-2004, 11:47 PM the SamBox II that I and Rudezuk has will hold up no problem!
Azrckcrawler 04-08-2004, 06:53 AM I have 2lo (8:1's) with the "S" shift pattern. Used it a few times.

Probably true... but how much is that going to add to the price? If its a bunch, even half of what the rockbox runs, I'd still go that way for a deeper crawl ratio overall and more options than just 8:1 or high range. Dont get me wrong, I think the Sambox is sweet... with enough "spare" income I'd have one in a heartbeat, but I can justify a double box with an 11.52 compound low, and a dependable 6.4 2Lo easier than a single 8:1 in a beef case... But if I ever broke the stock case with the 6.4 I'd buy the Sambox to replace it.
Samurai202 04-08-2004, 09:45 AM 8.1 is way to low for your only low range. Better to do the 6.4:1 now then get the rock box later.
And without knowing how you wheel, where you wheel, and what your over all goals are the answers in the pole are pretty much uneducated guess's.:flipoff2:
Goldmember 04-08-2004, 03:11 PM Stupid question for being a noob....when would you use 2 lo? Do you use it just to save on wear and tear for the front en? Maybe I'll come to need this once I get my 1.6 swapped in, but my current 1.3 has no go offroad unless it's in 4-lo and 1st. Thats running 4.62's and a 4:1. I'm swappin in yota's soon with 5.29's and I'll still be running only 33's. I just can't see where two low is useful. Again I'm sure it is, I just can't see it though. I'd think if you needed two low the terrain would be pretty rough where having the 4lo would be more appropriate...Just asking... BTW I'll give myself one of these :flipoff2: for asking the question.
Koko
Samurai202 04-08-2004, 03:38 PM 2 low is nice if you have a non selectable type front locker. That way you can disengage the front end for tight turns, but still have the low range gearing.
Goldmember 04-08-2004, 04:01 PM Point taken!
Thanks
Koko
zukin 04-10-2004, 07:17 AM Thanks for the opinions.
I ordered the TT 6:1 and hope to have it installed by next weekend. Will post pics of the new buildup soon.

Glenn told me it wouldnt hold up... I dont want to take that expensive a chance & I figure whatever that got me into would take at least that much to get me out of... So I'll go the safer route & see how it works. I already ordered the 6.4 TT gears and will add the Rockbox in January. Besides, I got real spoiled with double cases and 244:1 in my old Yota.
