Hello!

I have done my search, but have not found what I was looking for on the old topics. The question is, I found an 1984 Grand Wagoneer with a set of nice axles, and waould like to know if it is possible and reccomended as a swap for my YJ.

The pumpkin drop, etc, seem to be the same as Waggy's from 1982, which I found postings reccomending the swap, and some swap info online, but I have not been able to find info here or elsewhere saying if this swap (axles from a 1984) are reccomended. I greatly appreciate your help!!! If you know where I can find more info that would be great!!!

Thanks,

Gui :D :D

I have an 82 waggy front and its solid no vac. You could always buy a solid axle to slide in the passenger-side essentially making it the same as mine. If its a good deal go for it.

Hi Rockbuggy!

Thanks for the reply. What is the main difference between a vac setup and a non-vac, and how can I identify what is on it right now.

You mean that I can setup a vac type to non-vac by changing the axle shaft on the passenger side? Any other mod I need to do? Please let me know.

The Grand Wagoneer has Danas in both front and rear; can I use the rear as well?

Thanks, Gui

I'm guessing you have'nt seen it yet. The vac. disconnect thing is pretty obvious when you see it. I don't know about converting it, I've just heard to avoid it. Since grand Waggys are plentiful, (at least around here) I would find one that does'nt have the vac. stuff.
The rear axle, I think, would be an AMC 20, not a Dana. Either one would be good.

Hi Wayne,

Thansk for the info. Yep, I have not see it yet, but am assuming is a vac setup for the front. I think 83 and older are non-vac, which would be good.

In regarsd to the rear, you mean an AMC or Dana 44 from the rear would be good swaps to my YJ?

Thansk again!

The vac disconnect years are '83 and '84. Older or newer than those two years are ok. The vac disconnect isn't on the axleshaft like a YJ or XJ. It is in the center section and it isn't an easy swap. Parts on not interchangable between the two types. It's best just to avoid them and find another year. And yes, either the Waggie 44 or model 20 would be a good swap for the rear. This is especially true if you get the rear from the same vehicle as the front. That way you know the gear ratios match.

cmegoup is correct on all accounts.

I only post this, because I know how hard it is when you ask a question and you get two conflicting answers. Sometimes all you can go on is how many people are saying the same thing.

That disco diaphragm is visible sticking out of the diff cover.

Definately go with a non-vac axle. I got mine out of a 1980, it rocks. As for the rear, i was under the impression that all 1980+ model waggies had 44 rears. If that is the case it is definately a good swap into the rear of your YJ.

more of the same....peace

The rear is a Model 20 HD '80 - '87 then they switch to D44. The rear is D44 before '80 but it will most likely have an offset diff. The Model 20HD is a decent axle and you can use gears/lockers from CJ model 20s. I am almost through with a cheap disc conversion with the model 20.
