This arrived today while I was at work. Its a 350, TH350, and Edelbrock carb out of an 85 Chevy van. It will be going in my 85 CJ-7 eventually.

Cool! I just got me a 350 and TH350 to go in my 5. Since yours came out of a van, you do know that the tranny is a 2wd version, right? That means to put a t-case on it you're going to need the 4wd adapter and output shaft, and to put the shaft in requires a complete dissassembly of the tranny.

J. J. Yes I was aware that its 2wd and that it would need a new output shaft, however I did not know how much work would be involved. I guess I'll find out when I tear it apart huh? :) Hopefully I don't end up with extra parts.

Will that carb work out on steep hills? I know it would be good at the track ;) However I want to make sure it doesnt die on me during any hill climbs.

If you're tearing it apart, you might as well rebuild it while you're in there. The output shaft is one of the first things to go in a TH350 during assembly, thus one of the last to come out. I haven't rebuilt mine yet, but I plan on it. And from what reading I've done on the subject, it's pretty complex, so good luck.

What carb is it? My buddy has an Edelbrock and it ran until he shut it off when he rolled. But Edelbrock makes several different types of carbs.

Hmm, I know I may get flamed for this, but if it is super complicated I may just have my mechanic do it for me. I only have so much time and he is a great guy so I know I won't get raped.
I am not sure what exact type of Edelbrock it is yet, I only got it yesterday and it was too cold in my garage to stand out there forever in my shorts. Even though I was tempted, I felt like a little kid at Christmas.

I understand the feeling. Here's my feeling on a TH350 rebuild:

If you can build your own engine, you can build a TH350. That's what I've been told by people who have rebuilt TH350's before. I build my engines, so I figure I can build my tranny, too. It's all just about attention to minute details and a clean workspace. If this worries you, maybe you should have it farmed out. There's no shame in not wanting to screw up an expensive piece of hardware.

Sorry to burst your bubble on the carb :(, but I have a 600 cfm performer on my 429 bigblock and it sucks on hills. It also has the off road needles and seats in it. Your carb looked like the one I have on my motor. I may be totally wrong, but mine does not do well on hills. It will permanently plant your ass in the seet on straightaways though. Great carb for street driving, but I don't like mine for the trail. What about a Quadrajet? They seem to work real well off road "if" tuned correctly.

Well I guess since I already have the carb I will see how it goes first. If it gives me trouble than I will swap it out. They are not too expensive and swapping them is very simple. Hell I could do it on the trail if I really wanted to.

XG,
IMHO, I'd hock the tranny and just pick up a 4wd version. Less work, and less money if you end up paying someone else to do the work. Those tranny's are a dime a dozen.... they're all over the place. Dunno about the carb, but if it won't work well, you could prolly sell it to a camero driver and get a better one for not much more money.

-Will Well I will start to do the work myself, than if I get too far over my head I will bring it over to my friend/mechanic. I am sure he will finish the job for less or close to what a new tranny would cost.
