just purchased a 91 RangeRover hunter edition..when i fill up the tank i'd say about a 1/4 to 1/3gallon of gas comes rolling right down the front of the gas tank. i'm assuming its an overflow or vent problem but WTF? is this common? i'm not capping it all the way to the top and its spilling quite a bit. thanks for the help

Have you checked for rust in the tank?

no , the tank seems to be in good shape.. i've looked all over the tank and can't find anything. it seems to be leaking from the top front side of the tank and without dropping the tank i don't think i will be able to spot any holes that are high up.

Kevin, wilsby may mean to check inside the tank for junk...the one we pulled from my '91 a few weeks ago was plastic...

I think '91 is when they started the access hole for the fuel pump. If this is the case then pull up the rear carpet and remove the cover, take a look. This should help clear up some of the questions.
Regarding the plastic tank. I think that Rover did a recall at some point and replaced some of the steelies with plastic versions. I could be wrong as I only vaguely remember coming across this some years ago.

Spilling down the front of the gas tank? As in, the side of the tank towards the front of the car? Or is it spilling down the side where the filler neck/vent is? Have you checked the condition of the filler neck and the hose clamps?

its spilling down the side towards the front of the car. I will check things out and maybe drop the tank to really get a good look at things..i wasn't sure if there was a common problem with a vent hose or overflow thing...thanks for the help
