: Time For A Turbo
mickbj42 01-09-2002, 04:00 PM 3b Landcruiser motor. I am a bit of a tight ass and dont want to buy a brand new turbo or turbo kit. I already have an oil cooler and intercooler.
What could I get a turbo off from a junk yard? Hopefully with an internal wastegate. I am told a turbo off the 2.8 hilux turbo diesel will work. To me it seems a bit stupid to put a turbo off that to put onto the bigger 3b.
Most small trucks, Isuzu, Hino etc run no wastegate. (do you have them in the US??)
Any ideas?
gunracer1 01-09-2002, 04:11 PM no mini trucks have diesels here in the u.s. i would look at one from one of the minis you have though. your diesel, more than likely has a lower red line for rpm than a smaller motor and a smaller turbo will spool up faster than a bigger one. if you are wainting to run higher boost you can change the exhaust side to a smaller unit to spin the turbo faster. i did this to my cumming, went from a 20 cm2 housing to a 16cm2 housing. and it only cast me 80 bucks. the turbo spooled up faster, went to 22 psi booost[old housing was 13 psi]. just get on some of the diesel web pages and ask some questions you will find all kinds of ideas. mike
second hand turbo of a 2.8 will cost you, for a good one, about 1200 bucks as they are an after market option.
Look at getting the factory turbo kit that come out in the bj40's and strapping that on. should work out alot cheaper and be more reliable.
oil cooler and intercooler are worth what? about 150, so you use that to justify a second turbo kit, an oil cooler and intercooler are not needed on these motors unless you are running 15+ psi which i wouldnt even consider on a stock motor.
what part of australia are you from?

diesel have no vacume hense no waste gate
Charles Aarons 01-09-2002, 09:15 PM Diesel turbos DO have waste gates, frequently. Actuated by turbo boost pressure.
Turbocharging is VERY sensitive to turbine and turbine housing size and turbine pitch. It would be real easy to get it wrong. As a first guess figure out CFM = displacement times peak rpm, and use turbos for equal CFM. I can do a lot of calculating with complex formulae and I'd STILL buy an AXT/Garrett water cooled turbo for my Land Cruiser!
That said, there's rumors that Toyota Supra and Volvo 4 cyl turbos and intercoolers work for 3Bs....
What are you doing with an intercooler without a turbo? The AXT kit is very reasonably priced if you're paying with US$.

mickbj42 01-09-2002, 09:42 PM The reason why I have an intercooler and oil cooler is because I used to play around with Mazda rotarys too. Too much money getting spent on Mazdas though!!
Wastegates have nothing to do with manifold vacuum!!
Hilux/ mini trucks in Oz come out with turbo diesels, BJ40's do not come out with turbos in Australia
mickbj42 01-09-2002, 09:48 PM I have a turbo here that is off a small volvo loader with an internal wastegate but it is going to be too small. It is approximately To2 size where as the use around a To3 with the atx turbo kit.
I thought someone out there may have used a turbo off a -------- and found it worked well.
Oh yeah if you pay $1200 US for a turbo for the 2.8 you are getting ripped off!! I can get one for about $350 OZ, which is about $175 ish US

thats 1200 australian for a complete bolt on second hand kit, in good condition, you can get them for around 700 but often the turbos are junk.

you sure about that???????? never seen a factory australian turbo diesel

Nope never made them till the current shape.
You could use a turbo kit off a factory 3BT out of a FRP top cruiser.
mickbj42 01-10-2002, 12:50 AM Sorry not an original Toyota Australia imported Hilux. They come in the jap import toyota hilux surf. The motors are everywhere in jap import wreckers.
I am not after a "KIT" only a turbo, I am going to make exhaust manifold myself. I have made plenty before for rotary mazdas. More power than the cast manifolds that come in axt kits.
Also an intercooler is not required, but using an intercooler gives alot better power than without one. The cooler you can get the charge air the more dense it is = more power!! Plus more boost with cooler air= more power again!!
BJ On Roids 01-22-2002, 07:48 PM mate, just bolt one on!!
and instead of making your own manifold, just flip the existing one, thats what i did,
email me:
here (rob@hawkinstpt.com.au)
and ill send ya pics of 2 tubro instals on the 3Bs
its pretty easy stuff
cheers
rob

FRP tops, never came with a turbo from factory, not in Oz, but the SHORT WHEEL BASE 70 series did have a turbo on the LJ models (LJ and RJ are coil sprung versions of the 70 series but with hilux diffs and hilux engine and gearbox, but a landcruiser transfer case)
and landcruiser badging the engine the LJs had was the 2L-T
:flipoff2: :flipoff2: :D
I am looking for a turbo kit for a 1983 2h.I live in Calif, any ideas?

AXT
build your own
i can do this pretty easy, i finished mine a couple of weeks ago!!
Hey rob better check your info again a mate has a factory 3BT in a leaf sprung FRP top and has had it since new its never been touched in any way shape or form exept for maintenance.
BJ On Roids 01-23-2002, 07:14 PM factory 3BT hey?
hmmmmmm
they had a 13B-T but im sure it was import
unless its that limited edition one, even then im not sure if it had a turbo.
but ya gotta agree that 13B-T would be hard to find, unless you got it from a jap import from a cabover truck and paid the $4500 asking price, which im too tight to do!!
but im curious tell me more about his car!!
year, engine type, go allright?
You could be right with it being a limited edition as its red with gold stripes and has chrome SR5 style rims i think its got a factory diff lock too but have never taken too much notice i know its 3B/T cause i had to replace the thermostate housing for him and had trouble finding one.
BJ On Roids 01-24-2002, 03:12 PM sounds it!!
umm funny you should mention that thermostat hosuing problem
i have both types at home, the power steering one, faces to the passenger side, and the non power faces to the drivers side!!
