Damn that snow is melting fast!!!

BTW anyone know why they decided to plow Loon now? Seems to me that this is the worst time of year for wheeling up there with all of the runoff and wet ground and whatnot

Something about April 1
They monitor the flow from the second dam into Gerle Creek.

I would be concerned about traveling in that area during this time of year. Maybe Delalbright can elaborate on this, but the trail from the second damn to Ellis Creek is closed to motor vehicles from November to ?March/April?. This area is called the Ellis 4x4 trail. It is not part of the "official" Rubicon trail.

First, we need to remember that there are NO official closures of the Rubicon Trail or the Ellis Creek entrance. HOWEVER, we do have a voluntary trail restriction to stay off Loon Lake Damn and the Ellis Creek entrance trail area during winter months (ending about April 1st after SMUD plows).

BUT, most importantly, I recommend and encourage folks to stay off the trail in that area when it's wet, mucky and just plain destructive to travel in that area -- we cause erosion and mud holes that just have to be fixed later in the summer. We also get some of our friends and government partners upset with us for wheeling in that area during wet spring months/time periods. It cause a big mess, as you know. Snow banks force folks to create new trails around them. These new trails and bypasses are illegal and have to be closed later in the summer and repaired with FOTR labor.

So please help us out. Wheel when you make dust. :)
