: 2003 Rubicon
Anyone seen the report on the new jeep in 4wheel & off road mag, comes with factory 44s frt. & rr. with air lockers, (fugi?) 4.10s in the pumkins, disc brakes with a 4.0:1 gears in the box?
All under a factory warranty also...duh! Just wondering on your all thoughts....besides its about time someone came out with it all already installed on a stocker. Seems it may be a good platform to start anyway....no Im not into jeeps but if I was....
Now if Toyota came out with a bobbed 4runner with dual cases, lockers, hot axels, gears ect.....hmmm maybe they will get on the bandwagon too.
Sillyneck 01-09-2002, 08:08 PM I can't even imagine how many pretty boys and mall chicks will be cruising these things around just cause they come w/ bigger tires. Here's the friend in the passenger seat of the new TJ "hey so what do those buttons on the dash do?" driver "I don;t care..look at the chrome wheels and wide tires!"
:D

How can you read it when it's all misspelled:flipoff2: :flipoff2: :flipoff2:
SwampTJ 01-09-2002, 09:23 PM I wonder if something can be bypassed so the lockers can be engaged in 4hi. Only engaged in 4lo is almost useless to me. I like it though, would never trade my TJ for it. That would be a big step backwards. Is this going to be the last wrangler? I always heard that.

The tacoma one can be modified to run regardless of the gear the t-case is in.
But honestly, I don't think this jeep will ever see the light of the showroom floor.
60seriesguy 01-09-2002, 10:42 PM I'm not one to take what I read on commercial 4x4 rags at face value, but after seeing comments on the Rubicon TJ on several of them, I asked a friend who works for Daimler/Chrysler marketing; he says that as far as he knows, it's a go for mid-2002 as a 2003 model. He's not a wheeler so we didn't talk details, I got the impression that it will be sold in very limited numbers.
Curtis 01-09-2002, 10:58 PM I know someone who works for Chrysler also. He said it is a go for later this year, but he said the lines for Hummers will be shorter than for these bad boys (his words not mine).

my cousin is the manager of the dealership and i have my name on the list to get the first one. i might buy it to have for a cool around town convertable. do not count on seeing me drive it to the rubicon though.

I was thinking the same thing.:D :D
FJ4ZROX 01-10-2002, 09:09 AM I've seen the write up in 2 magazines now. I may be a "Toyota guy", but I would be interested in something I only had to add a GOOD lift and 35's to make a decent (not perfect, but workable) wheeler. I'm gonna stop by the Heep dealership to inquire about them.
I wonder how they are gonna get away with limiting the warranty for on-road use only with that kind of stock setup....

But can you imagine what they will retail for??? prob $35-40 for a TJ.... Then add $1000 for lift and another $1000 for tires... Man I spent a lot less than that on my taco and i got dual cases... :D :D There is no doubt that it's about time someone noticed that there is a huge market for this thing, but the unfortunate thing is that it's only the Yuppies that will be able to afford them...
60seriesguy 01-10-2002, 05:41 PM I really doubt they're going to ask $35K-$40K for a TJ, even with those added features. Historically, special editions aren't more than %5-%7 over the cost of the basic version (with the same engine).
My BIGGEST worry about the release of this "Rubicon" jeep is the inevitable marketing campaign that will go with it; it's tough enough seeing commercials with assorted 4x4's tearing through meadows and pristine streams, knowing how poorly it affects our image. The last thing we need are *more* bozos buying into an ad campaign and thinking that their out-of-the-box 4x4 allows them to be on any trail...
Sorry, I went to a Land Use meeting this week, I'm a little sensitive..I'll shut up and go have a

ryanwhit 01-10-2002, 05:46 PM theres no way it'll work. theres not that big of a market for a real trail rig from the factory. and besides, would'nt the people who have enogh money to blow on that thing want a sniper for a lot less? maybe not, but if i had 35-40k laying around i would'nt buy a damn jeep. they might produce it for a year or so, but i say within the next 5 years wranglers and cherokees will go to ifs.
Sloan 01-10-2002, 05:50 PM Hey Camo I'll buy you a :rainbow: sticker for the back:flipoff2:

I laugh... You'll have that thing wedged in the sqeeze rock on Big Johnson when it still has paper plates on it. :flipoff2:
60seriesguy 01-10-2002, 06:18 PM Ha, ha! Then you'll be back at the dealer, trying to warrant the simonizing on the paint after the rock rash obliterates it! :D
I think that if it can be done, then they should do it. Remember when Land Rover brought in the five hundred D110's in 1993? They were bought like hotcakes by yuppies who just wanted to feel like "Daktari", and I bet you that Jeep is hoping the same thing will happen with their Rubicon. After all, Daimler-Chrysler is in the business of selling cars...
If they really end up being $35,000-$40,000, that pretty much blows most hard-core wheelers out of their market, I can't see anyone blowing that kind of cash on a new truck that still needs a lot of upgrading when you can pretty much build yourself a *serious* rig for a lot less than that.

       I thought only Brad and I fawked with RS on the "spealing" thing. Nice one Bob.
Camo sure:rolleyes: I believe you. I'm with Lance on this one.
My friend Jeff's goint to buy one too. He says he's not going to screw it up. "I'll just put a little lift on it and only drive it on snow runs" The next thing is it'll wind up with a number on it and He'll be chasing points in the Bob Hazel series.
I wish they would of done this about 5 years ago so you could pick up a used stocker and then lift it and put some tires on it, and gear it, and reinforce it, and modify it, and change your modifications, and change your modifications because you didn't like it.....
sh**t, this rig is just like any OTHER.
but is a better than average starting point.

EricFJ40 01-10-2002, 07:46 PM Maybe this will convince Toyota to import FZJ-70's to the US. One of those with the electric lockers, full-float rearend and a nice low geared 5 speed would be awsome to have. They've been building them for years, it's just that we can't get them.
Chris Geiger 01-10-2002, 08:08 PM I think the Jeep Rubicon concept is great. I hope it sells. It sounds like the best out of the box wheeler in years.
The problem I see is that it's going to be a little taller than other Jeeps. Once Constuper Reports gets ahold of one that are going to report to the world that they roll over too easy are are unsafe to drive. Remember when they killed the Samurai? After they have reported their findings it will become fact in the minds of joe public. Then when some bozo does roll one wile driving drunk and with no seat belt the jury will grant a huge sum of money because every one knows the Rubicon is unsafe - after all that what CR said.
As for Camo I seem to recall you driving your Ford Exploder near the ARCA course not long ago. As I recall you drove it till it was up to it's axles in rocks! I agree with Lance, your going to wheel it, it's too late to change your colors now glitter boy!
well geiger just to clarify it is a expedition and it is my wifes. :D
and lance i have that line all figured out. i bet i can walk right through it. :flipoff2:

Chris Geiger 01-10-2002, 09:30 PM Pic!
Dingo 01-11-2002, 02:17 AM Anyone have a pic of the 2003 Rubicon? I am interested to see what it looks like.....and hoping its not like a Saharra (I think) where they put some odd looking molding on it. or the Commando (???) with the rounded out fenders......
mickbj42 01-11-2002, 02:35 AM OH NO.................................
A DINGO GOT MY BABY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Cliffy [JD] 01-11-2002, 06:53 AM Damit!!! I should have read the BB before I posted!!!
My thread on the same subject (http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=24388)
anyway please don't flame me.:flipoff2:
Ain't got the coin to buy one, but I'm thankful to see that they ARE listening and are producing something that at least has some built in features to make it more productive right out of the box. We've been complaining for a LOOOONG time that they don't listen and put IFS on every damn thing under the sun, it's nice t see that someone DID listen.
Now if I can just get a solid axle Blazer new with a warrenty, I'll be all over that. :D

i agree. this is like the tundra that was going to come with 33x12.50 and duals from the factory. they dumped those ideas in a hurry.
Belly Dragger 01-11-2002, 08:49 AM Man I don't believe it. I've been reading both threads on this and the remarks are fairly (mostly) negative regarding this Jeep.
You know I hope Jeep brings it to the table and sells a shit load of them. Then maybe other manufacturers will see that YES there is a market for a truck like ride, beefy components and quality factory options. True only 10% of the Jeep public actually off roads their Jeeps but who cares if it just sits down at the mall. Look at the junkyard parts that will be available after some snot nosed cheerleader lays it into a ditch and tells daddy she wants something faster that isn't so high () off the ground. Imagine an air locker that runs at 6 psi with LSD when not a spool in a Dana 44. Shit you guys outta see a little farther down the road.
HELLO! McFly!

You have a great point. I really do hope that they sell a shit load of these things. I'd love to go to the junk yard a strip all of the shit off it. Maybe others will follow with the same type of options on their vehicles. You made a very valid point!

Hell yes!! VERY GOOD POINT!!!! :usa:
aaronlosey 01-12-2002, 09:57 PM well, its coming whether everybody likes it or not.
i think its a great idea, everybody always bitches no one listens or builds vehicles for us, now they finally are. as for why someone wouldn't just buy a sniper? are you on crack? those are apples and oranges, and the TJ will still be at least 20$ less than a turnkey sniper. plus, you will have something that drives nicely on the road and isn't pulled over every five seconds even though you swear to the officers its legal.
i doubt the tj will be 30-40k, the dana 44 option was a five hundred and something dollar option with a track lock. i think we will probably see this model for about 26-28k. more than i would care to buy a jeep for, but still a steel. everybody is quick to bash newer jeeps, but come on, they have come such a long way since the cjs. and how often do you see some bastard just pop off his sway bars and do a trail you swear he can't do in his new tj. pisses me off, but i wouldn't mind having one. in colorado i see the damn things on our 4+ trails all the time, midly modified with just a little teraflex lift and a locker doing everything.
r77toy 01-12-2002, 10:08 PM There will be some in Moab at Easter for the press.
