: exhaust fumes.
sachilles 04-10-2004, 08:22 AM Ya know, this truck is beginning to chap my A$$.
I'm getting exhaust fumes in the cabin.....its not good.
At this point, their could be several reasons.
-1. I broke of the end of the exhaust piping near the rear bumper.
Pipe is aft of the rear tire, broken at the rear hanger.
Combine it with the corrosion near the rear tailgate....and thier could be trouble. However, I have for the short term, covered the gap with some rubberized insulation...its as tight or tighter than stock, back their.
2-It could be coming from the engine bay. Possibly have a gasket going bad. Header could be bad as well, there is corrosion there, but I could not see any leaks.
It seems to be worse if I put the fresh air vent, or open the window.....which must mean I'm creating a vacuum sucking in the exhaust into the cabin.....I also think it means the leak is in the forward end of the vehicle.
I've got to drive the thing a bit of distance today....think opening upper tailgate a crack would help?
Tuesday, I should be able to pinpoint the leak and take the appropriate action stop it, but for now I'm looking for the best idea to vent the fumes. Keep in mind....it isn't exactly super warm out....so driving down the road with every window all the way down isn't the most practical thing.
Can't take the car....cause I'll be going on some back roads that aren't the most friendly to vehicle with low ground clearance during this time of year.
Yes I know this is low-tech.
As long as we are on the subject....any decently priced headers out there that are worth looking into...if that's a necessary fix.
SeaRover 04-10-2004, 12:11 PM i'm beginning to learn the difference between us rover drivers and other makes:

WHINING
when are you and DieLucas! going to stop beating yourselves up and just fix your rigs? for fawks sake already! is this a forum for WHINING? or a forum for TECH?!
<rant off> :flipoff2: :flipoff2: :flipoff2:
first things first: why are the fumes so strong? dead o2's again, or something else not right? when was the last time you did a tuneup?
>> -1. I broke of the end of the exhaust piping near the rear bumper. Pipe is aft of the rear tire, broken at the rear hanger.
dood - $25 max will get you a new pipe from the muffler to exit locale of your choice. stop whining and go get it fixed!

that there is no reference to even popping the hood before whining on PBB is worrying me here. Less whining, and more wrenching. The gaskets are cheap - another set of gaskets to check out are the manifolds. If you have some aftermarket headers on there you're on your own. I discovered once that i had 3 missing bolts out of the DS exhaust manifold - it would be a good idea to retorque all the bolts, and make sure that the gaskets are in good shape.
also look at the ypipe to muffler connection good, or have the muffler shop look at it for you when you get the new pipe done.
sorry to vent - just seems like there's not enough cheese in wisconsin to go around lately to keep up . . . . maybe some of you aren't getting proper rations of beer or something . . . something in the air . . .?? dunno
cheers :flipoff2: :flipoff2:

wilsby 04-10-2004, 01:51 PM If you get fumes in the car, your exhaust is leaking. Fix it.
Until you have it fixed, close all windows and put the fan at full blast. That's what I did when I waited for my appointment at the muffler shop. If you still smell fumes, you likely have serious problems somewhere close to the engine. You should be able to hear where the leaks are, if any. My guess is that your problem is that your current systems ends before żour body does. Start by fixing that.

This happened to me in my old Disco when I put the 33's and a home built rack with jerry cans and a spot for the chainsaw on it.... It was to heavy for the door and bent the hinges ever so slightly.... A bunch of times I got sleepy/woozy in the rig... The topper was coming back from a pre-fordyce run in the sierra's with said gap ( ya, pipe was cut short for clearance ) and coming down the 10,000 feet to sea level I almost passed out, and barely made it.... had to stop at a friends and have the wife come pick me up, I was all red, delirious, woozy and tired.... She determined it was CO poisoning... it cleared up within a half an hour of leaving the vehicle..... we bought a CO monitor and sure enough..... especially when engine braking down a big hill or after flooring it up one.... I still remember it so I couldn't have killed to many useful brain cells
its bad Shiat... get it fixed ASAP... it will kill you, you can't smell it ( unless you need a tuneup or something )
Just do it

sachilles 04-11-2004, 08:54 AM SeaRover.....lighten up Francis....
if you actually read the post...you'd see I had planned to fix the rig on Tuesday.....my next day off.
I was simply looking for suggestions on how to reduce the current amount of fumes in the cabin...until tuesday.
I HAD to drive the truck yesterday. Its grounded until tuesday.
Before you get too worried that i didn't pop the hood....2-It could be coming from the engine bay. Possibly have a gasket going bad. Header could be bad as well, there is corrosion there, but I could not see any leaks. wonder how I figured that out?
and whining about someone whining....that's much better.:D
Is it in tune?....you might have me there...I could notice the smell....but my passengers could not. If I couldn't smell it....I wouldn't know their was a leak...and never realize there was a problem.
As for my proper rations of beer....made up for that last night.;)
If you don't hear from me after tuesday...the fumes got me.

roll down the windows and wear a warmer jacket? just a hunch . . . :flipoff2:
and hey - i was ranting, not whining! notice i said "us rover owners" in there - evidence of my whining is strewn all over this forum.
cheers,
-francis

Problem is Tom than installed a new rear door(and hinge) to replace the buggered up one, and than put tha big honking tire/gerry can back on.....than sold teh POS:flipoff2: to me where I of course went ahead and bounced around for another many miles slowly bending the door, so there's a 3/4" gap at top of door....guess what? .....the ol' exhaust is sucking in again! It's not just the hinges this time but the door is tweaked!
I located a new door(even the right fawken colour so won't have a mis-matched door as soon as I can go pick it up(if I don't get CO poisoning picking it up!) :D
BTW Tom, ya need to edit your POR profile! the series III is mine not yours! :flipoff2: even if I did Kill it......

kellymoe 04-13-2004, 04:08 PM Try Hedman headers. I am looking into headers also. So far for us in the states Hedman's are the easiest to come by but I hear quality is poor. You can order them straight form www.jet-hot.com for around $350 to your door or from Summit Racing for $109 uncoated. The coated ones are liftime guerintee against corrosion. More options in europe and australia.

Last time I tried, they wanted me to cough up 20 bucks to do it...
so being cheap I left it alone!
Hmmm, they changed stuff so now I can do it w/out being a paying memeber
TomW, cheap bastard
sachilles 05-06-2004, 02:18 PM All fixed :smokin:
Rear exhaust is fixed. Cut nicely so it won't get smooshed when the rovers but hits a rock or something.
Many leaks up front. Small hole near the right cat. Exhaust manifold re-sealed, both sides. Stud on one side of the exhaust were the downpipe connects to the pipe with cat was broken....fixed.
All that and a new U-joint installed in the rear for $132.
It'll be nice to drive it and not get sleepy, or get a headache :shaking:
