Batting a 1000 with the rangie this week.

Oil light is coming on solid(not blinking) after the engine has labored a bit, then I let off to idle. Touching the gas, makes the light dissappear. I've checked the oil, dipstick(on the car...not me), indicates that it is half way between max and min..
First I thought it could be a faulty oil level sender.....but it happens consistantly during the circumstances I've described.
I'm wondering if the oil pump is having a tough time keeping up, or thier is a clog somewhere.
Oil and filter have been in there less than 1500 miles....but I'll change it on tuesday just to make sure.

There is only one light on my 87
When it comes on solid...its oil level.
When it blinks it oil pressure.

This time its coming on solid.

Unfortunately, this truck has had that light blink in its past....nothing quite like carving a hole in a snow bank so you can pull the oil pump...in -10° weather. That was in January of 2003. I rebuilt it and its been fine since.

I think the light may be the other way around....blinking on startup indicates level. My level sensor is disconnected and i get it on start up every time....

solid is a pressure issue...not 100% sure but i think so. I recall that when my dizzy popped out after putting the engine back together and disengaged from the oil pump gear, i had a solid light......

just a heads up on a possible pressure issue....

good luck

hmmm....jeez hope your wrong...but I'll check the manual tonight.
The good news is yesterday...it didn't seem to show up as a problem. That would make more sense though.

Sorry,
I forgot about the 88 cutoff. Anyway, what viscosity oil?

Did you change from normal, or did you have a major temp change?

temp is has gone up, but we are still in the 40's.
Shell rotella.....10w 40(or was that 15w 40?).
Same oil I've been using for the last couple of years.

Tired motor.

Solid is oil pressure-- I believe it comes on when it falls below 10psi? Something very low like that. This happened on one of the Range Rovers I previously had, with 200+ thousand on it. I think its just a high mileage thing, theres enough wear in the motor that the pressure just isnt there at idle. I dealt with the problem by keeping my foot lightly on the gas when sitting in traffic, drove it that way for months without issue. One thing that seems to stick true for any Land Rover motor of any era, is that they will run like shit forever. I say let it run its course and when it dies, it dies. Not much you can do about it now aside from start rebuilding.

You say you rebuilt the oil pump last year... when you did that, you DID remember to pack it with Vaseline before reinstallation right?

Yup.....borrowed my roommates vaseline....packed full.....when I rebuilt it, it definately needed it....engine was stutering etc....
Its run fine since.

so adam....this one you had with low pressure...is that the one you were selling?

New problems this morning....was going to ground the rover...but I had to drop the audi off last night to have the exhaust patched.
Suppose to be dropping the rover off tonight for the same treatment....however...it decided to spit coolant....and it looks like its at the thermostat housing.....odd that it would let go.

i had a similar problem last year. my light would come on at idle once it warmed up, and applying the gas even lightly would make it go off. i swapped to a thicker oil and that helped for a good 3 weeks but then same results.

i eventually broke down and pick up a new sensor/sender (i can never remember the difference). anyway it was surprisingly cheap, like 5 bucks.

after instal everything has been fine since. may be worth the 10 bucks, and 2 minutes to swap it... i dont know.

*sidenote: i passed a fully decked out 90 on the interstate right before the stowe exit this mornin. yellow, NH plates, had f+r bumpers, winch etc... anybody on here.
gave em a thumbs up but i was in my s-10 so it was as cool as it could have been.

Thought about the sender being bad...
A while back, I bought one of those generic 3 gauge setups from wally world. Has oil pressure, water temp and ammeter.

I seem to have the initiative and need to install 2 of the 3 gauges at the moment. Not so sure I want to put in the ammeter though...might replace it with a voltmeter.
