My chiltons manual is a piece of SHIT. Wiring diagrams don't include the headlight circuit. Would someone please send me a scan of that diagram from a manual worth a crap? I'd much appreciate it. Thanks.

Don't know if it'll help any but here's the diagram out of the '86 manual (http://4-low.com/temp/headlight-wiring.gif).

Thanks for the quick reply. I'm not having any trouble. I'm redoing/upgrading my lighting and would like to start with a thorough understanding of what I have now before I start making changes. The link did hint at the way the circuit works, but I'd really like to have the schematic in from of me.

Thanks Shane,

That has to be pretty close to waht I've got in my truck. I'm not sure if it's exact, but I'm pretty sure it 's way similar. I'll do some verification tomorrow with a meter to check it out. Thanks again.

The Toyota headlights are grounded via the combo switch (its a switch ground system). A relay provides 12V to the headlight common connection then one or the other filament (high or low beam) is grounded via the combo switch to turn on. To upgrade this, you can use a pair of relays to ground the high and low beams up front, power the relay off the combo switch. I have a dual relay kit I picked up thet just plugs right in to do this.
