What should i expect to pay for 4.56 or 4.88 with spools

DANA 44 WAGGY 1984 DRIVERS SIDE DIFF (has 3.31)

DANA 60 FORD 1979 REAR FULL FLOATER (has 3.45)

Just trying to price out, if i should just weld an open carrier locked, or just go with a spool and r/p...

what do yall think?

Id weld the rear after buying a couple 35 spline side gears. Then if you are just keeping it 8 lug full floater I would call Dutchman or the axle brand of your choice and get custom 35spline shafts that are way stronger than stock 30 spline. The axles are 300 bucks and the side gears cant be more than 50 new. Then you have one strong locked d60 for less than 400 bucks. You can even buy as thick gear and run the 3series carrier. Just buy an open 4series d44 carrier, $50. new and your gears and a lockrite .

you lost me here ... what's with the d44 carrier ?

any chance of finding some 35 spline d70 or 14 bolt
shafts to fit in the d60 after adding 35 spline side gears ?

There's one problem with this. The 35 spline shafts won't fit through the spindles. They are too small. Do you have a cheap way to open them up for the 35 spline shafts?

you could use a dremel :flipoff2: Do a search there's actually a couple of really recent threads on boring spindles.

my 79 ford 60 rear had spindles with a 1.7" ID stock, from what I've seen and been told about half of the axles have large enough spindles from the factory. The OD is the same for 60, 70, and 14 bolt spindles judging by the bearing #'s I've found, so if the bore on your spindles is too small just take your axle to a machine shop and have them bore the spindles. Lincoln Welding in Sacramento said they could do it for me for about $120, then I found out I was one of the ones lucky enough to have the large bore spindles stock.

gears - 200

cheap install - 28

full install - 108

per axle, no spool for a 30 spline

go to a JYD and get 35 spline drill your spindles and get t 190$ spool. (if you want a spool)

I still don't see why people buy spools for $190+ when you can spend about $3 on some welding rod. Don't give me any shat about carrier strength either, cuz you ain't gonna break that 60 carrier.

Lemme see I could go out and buy a new open carrier for the gears Im installing.. cause well that'd be easier than cleaning them. Then weld them up.. or I could spend the $190 and not worry about it. Besides, I dont care what you say the spools stronger. And yes, I've seen split carriers.
