: 36s + 4" lift
tsm1mt 01-09-2002, 11:26 PM Someone was complaining it was slow around here, so...
I bought 4 used 36x12.50 TSL for $100 over the summer.
I've been itching to just get one mounted just for a test-fit..
Found a 15x8.5 Magnesium wheel in my pile of tires and wheels.. grabbed two screwdrivers and two hammers.. and went to work.
I wasted 2 hours, but..
http://tigger.tmcom.com/~tsm1/scout/jpg/1_7_2002/pic18.jpg
That's the baldest one. The other three actually have tread. This was the Right Rear. :D I hope to find another good used one, or buy two new ones and make this a #2 spare..
So tonight I was changing the oil in preparation of a trail ride in two weeks.. had my shiny new floorjack handy and the air wrench.. Hmmm...
Shot body mount bushings and failing body mounts to boot.
Front suspension, 4" Skyjackers, with 33x12.50 Sears Trailhandlers
Grab the jack.. just to see how it'll look..
http://tigger.tmcom.com/~tsm1/scout/jpg/1_9_2002/pic01.jpg
http://tigger.tmcom.com/~tsm1/scout/jpg/1_9_2002/pic02.jpg
Hmmm.. from this:
http://tigger.tmcom.com/~tsm1/scout/jpg/1_9_2002/pic000.jpg
To this:
http://tigger.tmcom.com/~tsm1/scout/jpg/1_9_2002/pic03.jpg
And jacked up..
http://tigger.tmcom.com/~tsm1/scout/jpg/1_9_2002/pic04.jpg
Look ma, NO FLEX.
Of course, the anti-sway bar was still hooked up.. and the shocks are dented and mangled..
Looks like, if i could get it to articulate more, I'd hit at the lower front of the fender (which has already been worked over when the spring mount broke off the frame..) and undoubtedly on the top of the wheel arch when turning and twisted.
Now to try the back..
http://tigger.tmcom.com/~tsm1/scout/jpg/1_9_2002/pic06.jpg
Stock XLC springs, SOA, axle moved 7/8" back with an offset center pin hole in the perch and U-bolt plate.
The 33s *just* fit most of the time.
Bolt on the 36s...
http://tigger.tmcom.com/~tsm1/scout/jpg/1_9_2002/pic08.jpg
Now jack it up just to check..
http://tigger.tmcom.com/~tsm1/scout/jpg/1_9_2002/pic10.jpg
http://tigger.tmcom.com/~tsm1/scout/jpg/1_9_2002/pic11.jpg
Obvously I couldn't get it to twist enough.
I expect it'd hit at the rear of the wheel well, and maybe at the front with these tires.
I did check.. easy enough to go 6" back before you run into the filler neck, and I think I can go 4" forward before I encounter the body mount.
All told that would be a 40" long wheel tub.. and the axle would only need moved back an inch or two to keep it all centered - which should keep the diff out of the gas tank or shock mount crossmember.
Finally, the 33 against the 36..
http://tigger.tmcom.com/~tsm1/scout/jpg/1_9_2002/pic12.jpg
Fortunately, I only have three of the Mag wheels, so I won't be bolting on all 4 TSLs just yet..
I think if I just lowered the rear bump stops for good measure, I could easily go snow wheelin' without any real problems (at least, as far as clearing tires goes.. we'll see how well my stick-welded tacked in U-joints survive)
Anyhow.. something to gawk at/think about on a slow week.
Or just tell me how :rainbow: I am for running 33" Trailhandler ATs. :flipoff2:
The price was right and they work better than the Coopers I wore out in a year. *grin*
Dunno when I'll actually get around to clearancing for the 36s.. but I've been itching to at least get a test-fit done so I know what I'm up against..

I *do* have some 2"x3/8" stock lying around.. and almost have my drill press back in operation. :D

The SAWZALL is the plan.. but not this week.
I'm putting my race truck back together hoping there's a race in February.. then finish up the rest of the shop and THEN I might get to tear into my trail rig FINALLY.
And yes, SIIs have dinky 30.5" long wheel tubs, so cutting the outer fender won't do me ANY good - the rub is usually at the rear of the wheel well, not on the outer fender lip (and if it does rub there, it's usually rusty enough that you just need to be careful not to litter on the trail..)
When I finally have the time, I'll be doing wholesale body alterations.
I have two new 'glass quarters to install - that'll be sawzalled first - and one new inner quarter (passenger side is damaged so badly the inner quarter folded).
I might just "practice" on the old quarters before I cut 'em off though..
There just isn't any good *easy* way of doing it. :(
Need to get around to it before too much longer.. my storage shed is getting full with Scout body panels. New doors, tailgate, inner quarter, outer quarters, body mounts..

You got any junked 80/800 fenders or grill? I wanna experiment but not at the risk of ruining mine.

The 80/800 parts are all at a buddy's place. A complete SR-2, and two 800s..
I can't remember if any fenders were damaged too badly or not.
Then there's the shipping... ;)

Dude what rock do you live under ?
This is Toms truck and who gives a fluck what it looks like!
Function before fashion :flipoff2: :flipoff2: :flipoff2:
nwmud 01-10-2002, 09:20 AM ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZz Sawzall will make it all fit.
That's my plan - as soon as I get beyond the bare frame my truck looks like right now. :flipoff2:
After all we all want big tires and good CG on our trucks.
Have fun - Wish I could get out and play. :(

Uh.. me? :D
I'd like to have it look "decent" again when I'm done.
More importantly, I want my doors to close again, and the tailgate to open again. As it is, tree-rash has cured the doors from closing and the tailgate from opening. :D
Function before fashion :flipoff2: :flipoff2: :flipoff2:
That's almost always the rule with the race truck.. but I'd like to go back to being able to drive my trail rig to work now and then. :D
Race truck might start looking pretty before long, too.. I have a different stack of body parts in the shed for it!

Lots of parts, no time to install

Yet another reason the Sawzall is staying in it's case a little while longer.. I can still go play. :flipoff2:
Like I said.. I see 6" available for adding on to the wheel tub to the rear, and about 4" to the front. That would mean cutting right down and leaving just the square-tubing portion of the center body mount.
At the rear, that would be taking it right to the rear edge of the factory body stiffener, and/or a little bit further, but NOT relocating the fuel filler neck.
Move the axle back an inch or two to center the tire.
40" of clearance without having to go through the trouble of customizing the center body mounts or relocating the gas tank filler n' such.
I need to find a Hula-hoop or something that's 40" in diameter to use for a template. :D
Anyone know if a carbon-arc would make a clean enough cut, or do I really need to go borrow a buddy's plasma cutter? :D
Unless you go wider axles, you'll also need to move the inner face of the wheel tub inboard so when the tire "tilts" it won't hit the tub.
Which means a smaller or no back seat. I'm thinking about a CJ or flat-fender rear seat mebbe.. worst cas a single-seat bucket wedged between two wheel tubs. :D
I have it all thought through, just need the time to GET IT.
Worst part is it all involves CLEANING the Scout first. Then again, I might find all of my missing sockets and 4 9/16" wrenches.. :D

Heh. I bought 'em over the summer.. brought 'em home the same day I brought my crewcab home.
But they're not on the Scout yet. I'm short one wheel to make a set, and I'd like to replace one of the 36s.
Three are just down to the wear bars :( but they do have tread.. the other.. well, it does have big side lugs. :D
The bald one is the one I was using for test fitting..
Les Schwab just opened in town and a buddy works there.. he's threatened to bring by the "90-days same as cash" paperwork by and get me pricing on some new TSLs..
VERY tempting.
If I could ever get this #@#%# shop finished and get back to working on IHs...
The FUN rig still runs little 31s..
Lesse.. you have a 3spd, 196, 4.88s and 38s..
While I run a high-stall auto, built 304, 4.88s, and just 31s... HANG ON. :D

Seeing as how lite they are, I don't think shipping would be too much..plus, this doesn't have to happen anytime soon, so maybe we could meet up at some event...Let me know whatcha got if ya want....

I have two friends with plasma cutters nearby.
I bought the ArcAir off Ebay over the summer, but I haven't had a 220 outlet to plug my stick welder into since March. :(
I still don't. I'm waiting until after the walls are done to install the big 220 outlets for the oven, stick welder, and future 220 MIG..
Oven? Might do some powder-coating one of these years.. and I had the oven, sooo...

I forgot about this pic already being on my webshot's account. This is when I first got my 36's. I still had the 27 front and 2 piece 44 rear.. Just made some Shackles and drove this thing everywhere (for about a week).

SAWSALL!!!
Sooner than later, too.
Thought I was good to go - found a fourth wheel and took 'em down to the tire shop..
one of the "has tread" tires leaks from the "vent hole" in the sidewall (must be something used when they mold 'em).
Drat.
Still, I have two decent tires ('bout 33% tread it seems.. which is still as much or more tread depth as the ATs on the Scout now) mounted on rims complete with the RAD valves installed..
Since I know the back will be the worse, I mounted 'em up in the back and took my raked SII for a ride last night.
Finally found a good frozen snow-pile..
It was too dark for pictures... but I tried. ;)
http://tigger.tmcom.com/~tsm1/scout/jpg/77/try36_1_30_2002/file001.JPG
If you're imaginative, you can see the TSL (passenger side, rear) has curled the RR quarter panel under (popped it back out, too).
http://tigger.tmcom.com/~tsm1/scout/jpg/77/try36_1_30_2002/file002.JPG
It's just lightly rubbing at the front of the wheel opening (I don't think it hit the rocker, but about mid-way up where the wheel tub is is about where it was touching).
In the back, it curled the quarter under, plus it scraped some dirt off the "rear face" of the wheel tub, just on the outer portion.
OTOH, the spring U-bolt plate was about 2.5" from the bump stop bracket and the poor stock rear spring was already negative..
Sooo.. I think a little trimming, bringing the wheel opening arch rearward at a sloping angle (instead of the more or less "U" shape it is now) will keep the tire from folding the bottom of the quarter in.
I can clearance a little more from the rear face of the wheel tub - it was rubbing "outside" of the inner body, where the wheel well just stops the mud from flying into the quarter panel cavity.
Then work on my bump stops and call it good.
The factory stops would almost do the trick, but I need 'em about an inch lower, and an inch or two outboarded so they hit the U-bolt plate.
Heck, might even help save the rear springs!
Looks like I'm ordering two more tires from 4WPW tonight (free freight until Friday!)..
Front clearance shouldn't be too hard - keep the anti-sway bar attached and it doesn't flex. :flipoff2:
There's only snow to play in this time of year anyways...

Hooper needs money for a crawler box, then I will look into larger tires. No point in putting larger tires on without lower gears, and no point in swapping gears when I want a crawler box.
So, I am saving for my crawler box and keeping my 33's until I can do it all right.

Heh heh. I had to do a lot of "Gamma Correction" just to get the general outlines to come out! :)
I guess my 2-cell Maglite just doesn't give off enough light for the camcorder. :)
Didn't help that the battery was dead on the camera, so I couldn't even add in the built-in light..
