: speedo's for dummies

OK,
I've had a programmable VDO speedo for like 3-4 years now...
Problem is, its not hooked up yet :) I pulled my old speedo and put this one in and used what I thought ( at the time ) was the correct wiring pinout... but alas, It got power , dash lights, the digital odometer sat at zero if I recal, but when I drove, it did nothing.... I tried to calibrate it and nothing.... I poofed a few fuses while doing it using the wiring diagram from the LR electrical
manual .... but that manual doesn't seem to correlate with *MY*
old speedo's wiring?

So heres my question(s):

If someone has the wiring diagram to specifically hook up the VDO programmable speedo to a 97 D90
( with a 95 non-electric t-case )... I'd appreciate the pinout and wire color coding description...

Also since I switched my 97 solenoid t-case for a 95 non-solenoid unit..... A 95 pinout/color code chart may be nice... I forget if the output for the speedo comes from the tranny or the t-case, but I recall t-case.
If it is from the t-case:
Could it be possible that the 95 t-case is giving me an analog signal as oposed to the 97's digital one and I need a buffer or A/D converter now like the guys with 95's who run these speedo's? If so, could someone point me to the info for that?

Anyways... they have alot of speed traps where I live ( ask me how I know  and the speed limit is like, 25 everywhere..... I don't drive the D to much on tarmac, but when I do, it would be nice not have to guesstimate speed based off tach speed and the doppler effect of trees wizzing by :D

GPS is pretty accurate Tom. :D

I use it in the Serious One even though I have a VDO speedo in there (not hooked up tho...sound familiar?).

I recently hooked up the VDO on the CrewCab. Here's what I did.

I took a Disco1 VSS (variable speed sensor) and installed it. Took two wires, and hard wired them to the speedo.

One is power, one is to the speedo (carrying the signal from the VSS).

If they are hooked up backwards the speed on the VDO just reads slower.

I believe that if you do a search you might find a thread where you can find the VDO instructions online. I have them in my truck, but I'm not sure exactly what you need.

I'll be home all day if you want to call. 702-395-8144

I think the proper term for us is: "Lazy Bugger", I have a badge thats not mounted to prove it :) You might have one too?

Ya, I've got a GPS for it, but I don't like leaving it mounted on the dash as its a thief magnet ( then again I could rid the world of all thieves by leaving it their and waiting in the bushes nearby with my 44 magnum for the theifs to line up :D , uhm never mind... I never said that ! And I don't own any guns, ya thats it.... )

So then its a real pita to keep hooking it up and unhooking it etc...

Last time I looked on the web the directions were vague enough that it didn't cross over to my wiring colors ( or maybe it was just me ) I thought it was the one w/ the pink?

I'm gonna go yank the diff, fix the frikin E-brake cable , pull the slave cylinder on the Porsche ( ya its busted too! ).... and then try and get some real work done later
If I get to the speedo, I'll call ya...., I recall their are like 4-5 wires going to my speedo
Wich ones the speed output from the t-case, and what bloody hole does it go in on the VDO ?

I'm afraid I'm not familiar with that term.

I have a '95...

ALL of the 95s had a mechanical speedo cable. I just got a hall-effect transducer from VDO and had a connector made to hook it up to the mechanical cable. Then I didn't have to let Lucas mess with my speedo other than for power.

If you have a 95 mechanical t-case, you should be able to put a transducer either directly on the t-case or connected to a short mechanical cable. Then run the electrical wires up to your dash.

But that'll only work if you don't mind a little running around for adaptors and little stuff.

Hope it helps all y'all!!!

Btw, on my way across to MD from Cali, so if anybody needs rover parts or help with installs, let me know!

Here you Lazy Bugger, I did a search for you.

YOU CAN FIND YOUR MESSAGE ABOUT THE PROGRAMMABLE VDO SPEEDOMETER BY CLICKING ON THE GREEN WORDS HIGHLIGHTED RIGHT HERE. (http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/d90/message/59221)

I installed a VDO VSS right into my t-case and it has a 3 pin connector... This got rid of the entire cable system. Does anyone know where or how to wire it to the speedo?
