lots of speedo questions lately . . .
i can't seem to locate the speedometer cable input to the "Q" box transfer case from a DiscoII. there's a hole where the cable goes into compared the older LT230's, but on this one it looks cast shut deeper into the case! i must be missing something obvious . . . like more parts, i'm sure :flipoff2:
also - there are two pig tails by the lockout solenoid on the top of the case. Is it safe to assume that the non-solenoid connector is for the diff-lock indicator? As others have indicated, I just took out the lock-out / plunger mechanism from the solenoid and sealed it back up.
cheers,
isaac

disco II get speedo input from abs.
 say it ain't so. hmmm . . . maybe it's time to get some VDO love in there, and rig up some kind of a sensor at the prop shaft. 'tinking . . . 'tinking . . .

yes, you're right.. disco II gets speedo input from ABS. However, inside the case the gears are there. You can drill and tap the hole. it's in the right spot.
Otherwise, swap the rear output from your busted up old LT230 onto your Q-box... that works too!

A buddy of mine w/ a DII looked some stuff up on his RAVE cd.
a) the DII LT230 is referred to as an LT230 "SE"
b) the SE box does not have the gears internally for the speedometer.
as taken from the manual
Whilst similar to LT230Q transfer boxes fitted to other models, the LT230SE transfer box has certain engineering
modifications incorporated which are as follows:
*** Uprated torque capacity
*** Modified front and rear output and cross shaft housings
*** Intermediate gear bearing pre-load now controlled by a
selective, non-collapsible spacer
*** Speedometer drive and driven gears not fitted for this
application
*** Modified high/low hub
*** Modified front output flange and mud shield
*** Differential lock fitted to certain vehicles but no longer
driver operated
*** Modified, cable operated, high/low selector lever and
brackets
*** Fixed setting of differential lock warning lamp switch on
vehicles fitted with differential lock
so! GPS it is - more accurate, anyway. Does anyone need a speedo for a '91 rangie?? :p

dude
there has GOT to be an easy way to modify the SII box for a cable driven speedo. We threw a SII box into a 98 disco last week becuase the parts guys said the part Number superceded to the newer part number. will get on it manana for details... in the meantime, beer

10spline - many thanks in advance. I'm guessing they grabbed the gear from the old case and swapped into the new one? I'm converting over from the borg-warner 1351 vicsous transfer case, and doubt the speedo gear parts would swap to the new case very easily.
cheers

To successfully conver the LT230 SE case from a 99' or newer DII, you will need the complete rear-output housing, rear-output shaft, and associated speedometer gear from an LT230 "Q" or "T" transfer case. Neither the SE shaft nor the housing will work - you need the complete rear-output assembly. It is a simple bolt-in procedure, and the speedo-gear hooks up as normal.
The Disco style speedo attachment uses a little plastic wheel (visible in the pics). The rangie Borg-warner style just plugs in directly to the gear with a square-cable. If this is for a rangie, just remove the plastic wheel (pull up to remove) and then insert your speedo-cable down into the gear. All in all a pretty simple procedure.
I have removed the lockout solenoid on my transfer case, and permanently wired the the neutral alarm. I didn't bother with the diff-lock light, either. I obtained the complete linkage from a D1, and found that I had to adjust the main hi-neutral-low lever all the way up to get it to operate all three. Console fitment is a bitch - I will probably ditch mine and make something new as I have time.
some picts - note the spiral surface on the main shaft at the large diameter, and then on the other case the absence of the speedo gear assembly all together. Hope this helps someone in the future.
everything is working well, and no more drive-train clonk!! :D
